Environmental Mandate

The “Bucharest World Postal Strategy” was adopted by the Congress of Bucharest 2004. This document of strategic planning over the period 2005-2008 includes Objective 4 “Postal Reform and Sustainable Development”.Program 3 of Objective 4 above mentions various goals:

  • Make postal operators more aware the need introduce/speed up changes in their production process

  • Taking account of environmental protection issues

  • Ensure that as many member countries as possible observe the concept of sustainable development

  • Increase cooperation with the governmental and non-governmental organizations responsible for environmental protection issues

Environmental Activities

At the 23rd Congress of the UPU in Bucharest 2004, it was decided to create a Task Force “Environment and Sustainable Development” whose 2005-2008 work programme includes:·

  • Gathering feedback from national postal services in order to understand their vision, actions and policy regarding sustainable development

  • Updating the Guide “Postal services and the environment

  • Developing a tool-kit for self-diagnosis of postal services· Implementing a public awareness campaign of postal services and their employees on the benefits implementing sustainable development polices

  • Organising an international conference on environment and sustainable development for national postal services in 2006

  • Continuing cooperation with UNEP

  • Continuing cooperation with the Group “Environment” of PostEurop

  • Planning and conducting a 2008 international audit on the sustainable development practices of the national postal services of UPU member states
