Over four thousand local government representatives from across Africa converged in Nairobi to discuss implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in African cities with central governments, civil society, private sector and international organisations.
Delegates of the 4th AfriCities Summit confirmed that Africa is behind in the implementation of the MDGs. They affirmed that cities played a key role in achieving poverty eradication. They also stated that a healthy environment was a prerequisite to meet all goals enshrined in the MDGs. In order to achieve them, local governments needed to improve delivery of environmental services and national governments needed to decentralize power to the local level. The urban poor, slum dwellers, and the marginalized had to be involved in urban development and in the implementation of the MDGs.
