Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Workshop on Bio-fuels
UNEP Headquarters, Nairobi, Kenya, 28-29 June 2007

World Urban Forum

Many African countries are increasingly adopting programmes to promote bio-fuels as an alternative source of energy because of its potential to foster socio-economic development, address urban air quality and provide energy security. However, there is need to consider environmental standards in bio-fuels production, technological requirements and the local market when developing bio-fuels strategies.

The workshop aimed at sharing experiences on existing biofuel programmes, identifying policies and tools available for bio-energy planning and management in order to minimize negative social and environmental impacts and maximize benefits. The workshop also identified needs for capacity building and technology support and ways to address these, including policy recommendations for national strategies.
