Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan for Nairobi: Second Training on Assessment of Current Waste Management System and Gaps Therein, and Targets and Issues of Concern for ISWM

The second training on Assessment of Current Waste Management System and Gaps therein, and Issues of Concern for ISWM under the Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan (ISWMP) preparation process took place on 9-10 July 2009, at the Pan Afric Hotel in Nairobi. The training was organised by the City Council of Nairobi (CCN) in collaboration with UNEP and the National Task Team (NTT).

The training was conducted by experts from University of Cape Town (UCT), and UNEP’s International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC) Japan. Other than the NTT , research assistants from local universities who are assisting the task team in waste inventory and assessment of systems, also took part in the training.

Main aspects covered during the training included an assessment of SWM polices, institutions, financial mechanisms, technology, and stakeholder participation. Target setting for IWSM, and stakeholder identification and issues of concern was also discussed.
