EASTERN EUROPE

CZECH REPUBLIC

A number of activities were undertaken in the Czech Republic to commemorate World Environment Day. The Minister of Environment participated in the event organized by the UN Information Center ? Prague, in collaboration with the Ministry. On this occasion, the Environment-friendly Ecolabels were awarded.

GEORGIA

In Georgia, more than 50 children participated in a mini-conference and a childrenís drawing competition, which were organized by UNEPís Regional Office for Europe and the Georgian Ministry of Environment through the INFOTERRA national focal point. 

This event marked the start of a sub-regional childrenís art competition entitled "Children for a Peaceful and Healthy Environment" for the Transcaucasus region. The children used this platform to display their ideas and opinions on environmental issues, such as: air and water pollution, waste management and military activities. Plans are underway to use the drawings from the competition to produce animated cartoons and films on the environment of the Transcaucasus.

LATVIA

In Latvia, the Environment Data Centre undertook a number of activities in collaboration with Naudite Parish in Dobele District. In addition, the surroundings of Apqulide Lake were cleaned up.

MACEDONIA

On the occasion of WED, the Ministry of Environment of Macedonia organized a number of events. In cooperation with the Environmental Press Center, the Ministry developed an environmental education video, which was aired on TV stations throughout the country. The Ministry also took part in a trilateral conference on the environment and nature protection, which was held on 4-6 June. Minister Popovski gave the welcoming speech at the event organized by the Movement of Ecologists of Macedonia.

The Office of Ozone Layer Protection in the Ministry of Environment organized 

a press conference at which a new brochure and a documentary film entitled "Letís Protect the Ozone Layer ? The Macedonian Experience", were launched. A video and a poster were also presented at the press conference.

UKRAINE

The small town of Tartabunary, with the help of the local environmental NGO "Revival" organized a March for Parks programme where children helped prepare the soil and planted flowers which they brought from home. They were also involved in a clean-up campaign of the river Fontanka, and wrote an article in the Ecobulletin about World Environment Day. 

UZBEKISTAN

In 1999, the UN Office and the State Committee for Nature Protection in Uzbekistan used WED to focus public attention on the richness of the countryís natural resources, and on the need for practical actions to protect them. Together, they organized a special event in the Chatkal Biosphere Reserve on 4 June. Representatives from various government departments, NGOs, UN agencies, diplomatic missions and students (some 200 participants) took part in clearing the last track of road leading to the main entrance of the reserve. This exercise was followed by a visit to the parkís museum where the participants viewed a photo exhibit on UN activities in the field of environment around the world.
