comprehensive "real-time" way to observe state
of world's oceans
Paris/Nairobi, 5 June 2002 - UN Oceans
Atlas launched on World Environment Day . The pioneering
Atlas, that provides users with continuously updated
strategic data on the state of the world's oceans, maps,
development trends and threats to human health from
the deteriorating marine environment is being launched
here in Paris on 5 June, World Environment Day. The

Impact
of global warming on mountain areas confirmed by UNEP-backed
mountaineers
GENEVA/NAIROBI, 5 June, 2002 - An
expedition, dispatched to the Himalayas to chronicle
the environmental health of one the world's most famous
mountain ranges, has gathered startling evidence of
the impacts of climate change. The team, backed by UNEP,
has learnt that the glacier, from where Sir Edmund Hillary
and Tenzing Norgay set out to conquer Everest nearly
50 years ago, has retreated by around five kilometres
up the mountain.
Shenzhen
City, China to host 2002 International World Environment
Day celebrations
Nairobi, 11 March 2002 - The City of Shenzhen in the
People's Republic of China will be the venue for the
main celebrations of this year's World Environment Day
(WED), on 5 June. "I am delighted that China has
generously offered to host this important United Nations
Day and I believe it will be a unique opportunity to
push the environmental agenda forward", said Klaus
Toepfer, UNEP's Executive Director.
UNEP
backed expedition flies to Himalayas in the International
Year of the Mountains to chronicle environmental threats
London/Nairobi, 13 May 2002 - A team of expert climbers
is leaving for the Himalayas today to gather first-hand
accounts from monks, local people and other travelers
on the state of the environment of the world's most
famous mountain range. The expedition, led by the veteran
climber and broadcaster Ian McNaught-Davis and Roger
Payne, a senior official with the International Mountaineering
and Climbing Federation (UIAA), will also visit Island
Peak to film and record the dramatic impacts that global
warming is having on glaciers world-wide.
The
City of Shenzhen, People's Republic of China, one of
eight individuals and organizations, to receive UNITED
NATIONS Environment Award
NAIROBI, 15 May 2002 - The United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP) announced today that the City of Shenzhen,
People's Republic of China, has been elected to the
prestigious ranks of its Global 500 Roll of Honour for
outstanding contributions to the protection of the environment.
The organization is one of eight individuals and organizations
to receive this honour in 2002.
Two
Chinese cities, a Jordanian Princess and five green
groups to be honoured on World Environment Day
The awards will be presented to the winners on 4 June
as part of the international World Environment Day (WED)
celebrations. To forge global links and to implement
ideas, which can contribute to a more sustainable future,
a network of all Global
500 laureates has been formed.
Trees,
Trash and Toxic Leaded Petrol Targeted in this Year's
World Environment Day Celebrations in Kenya
Nairobi, 30 May 2002 - An ambitious tree planting scheme,
an action plan to phase out poisonous leaded petrol
in East Africa and clean ups of litter-strewn areas
are among some of the highlights of this year's World
Environment Day (WED) in Kenya.
