Centro Colonnades Shopping Centre and Zero Waste South Australia are currently conducting the We're Parting with Plastic project, to highlight the need for the community to look at alternatives to using plastic shopping bags. Local schools are invited to participate in the Centre's World Environment Day celebrations on Thursday 2 June, between 10am and 8pm. There are activities and displays being set up for school visits and hosted by the Museum, Energy SA, SA Water, Keep South Australia Beautiful and the Onkaparinga Catchment Water Management Board. Schools are also invited to be part of the Swap 10 used plastic shopping bags for a FREE bag of organic Cottage Mulch, which is generated from the Centre's Biobin organic composting system.

The faculty of Environmental Sciences at Nathan Campus, Griffith University, celebrated World Environment Day with an initiative entitled “Redeeming Our Pledge to Save Environment and Make Green Cities”. The students gathered at the nearby City Center shopping mall to conduct awareness activities on 'GREEN SHOPPING'. They requested people to reject the disposable plastic bags and go for 'GREEN BAG'. Australia uses 6 billion plastic bags each year most of which ends in the landfills.

On the occasion of WED, the Environment Subcommittee of the United Nations Association in Australia -Western Australian Division (UNAA-WA) is having an international treeplanting on the banks of Henley Brook, near Perth, Western Australia. Henley Brook is a significant tributary of the Swan River, Western Australia's major waterway. The event is being sponsored by a major bank, Westpac Bank, Australia, and many of the Westpac staff will join the team of planters. More than 80 people are expected to be involved, from well known international company Ikea, to representatives from the Embassies and Trade Commissions, and the Overseas Students from the major universities. The aim is to join with the already vigorous and increasing number of Associations who are salvaging the river from its degraded status, and making it once more a pristine waterway which flows through the heart of Western Australia's capital city.

Hawkesdale P12 College is organizing a "Students Living Sustainably" conference on the occasion of World Environment Day. It involves 300 students between the ages of 10 and 15 from five schools. The opening address will be by Arron Woods (environmental scientist and Young Australian of the Year 2001). Students will be divided into twelve groups and take part in four 30 minute workshops, one from each of the themes Water, Waste, Biodiversity and Energy. After a "waste - wise" lunch, students will present the work they have been doing in their own classes during terms 1 and 2.

To celebrate WED, Parks Victoria and the National Gallery of Victoria have joined forces to create an environmental trail entitled “the Altered Land”, with artworks from the permanent collection of Australian art. The trail will highlight environmental issues and explore the ways in which artists have captured the changing Australian landscape. Approximately fifty works of art are included in the trail, many of them depicting national park sites within Victoria. This important collaborative project will be launched on World Environment Day, Sunday 5 June at 2pm, at the Ian Potter Centre at Federation Square, Melbourne.

This year St Bernard's Primary School will host the Eurobodalla's World Environment Day Expo. The day will start off with a performance from Carroll College Drama Unit, with its Clean Earth Clean Ocean skit. The skit will highlight the environmental theme the primary students of the Eurobodalla have been given for 2005. The event is run in an expo format, where representatives from a variety of organizations interact with small groups of students on rotation throughout the day. The Eurobodalla Shire has been running this activity since 1997.

The City of Perth, in partnership with the Town of Victoria Park, the City of South Perth and the Claise Brook Catchment Group, is hosting the World Environment Day celebrations. The event will take place on 5 June, from10am to 4pm, at Point Fraser. Since the Point Fraser car park will be closed, to reach the place the participants can cycle, walk, or go by bus or train. WED activities will include: performances of the City Farm Chameleon Brass Band, a community planting at Kensington Bushland, a cycle tour of Perth, a walking tour of Point Fraser, rides with the hydrogen fuel cell bus of the Department of Planning and Infrastructure, a speech by the Water Corporation and WA Museum, a Kings Park bushwalk and various workshops at City Farm. The event will bring together (10) local primary schools and (15) community partners to share and experience environmental learning. Up to 350 students will be invited to Portland Aluminium to participate in many exciting environmental activities and also be treated to a waste wise/healthy lunch. The Bedourie State School in a small town located in the far west of the state of Queensland in Australia, with a general population of 120 and a student population of 14 is commemorating World Environment Day in a significant way. They are located on the edge of the Simpson desert where the water supply comes from the Great Artesian Bore, which is directly below the school. It is hot water and the students are learning about the importance of using this water wisely.

On the occasion of WED, the school is building a football oval using a complex network of underground irrigational systems. A trip to the local council office has been organised and a guest speaker has been arranged. This person is an environmental scientist and they will discuss with the students the possibility of promoting a sustainable environment. The conclusions will involve the students creating a banner (on calico) exhibiting what they have learnt about greening their environment. This unit concludes on Friday 3 June.

To celebrate World Environment Day, as well as the beginning of Queensland Week EAST BUG (Easy And Sustainable Transport Bicycle User Group) is being officially launched. EAST BUG is a community based, not for profit group that wants to encourage more people in the Eastern Suburbs to ride bikes, and advocate for high quality cycling facilities to make it safer and more attractive to ride more often. If you live south of the Brisbane River and east of the SE Freeway out to Wynnum this means you. If you ride a bike for fun and exercise or to commute to work or school or would like to in the future you are welcome to come along. Bring your family and friends and have a great time with us enjoying a free hot breakfast. Why not ride in and make a day of it. Breakfast will get underway at 8:30am in the park along the bike path at the bottom of the Kangaroo Point Cliffs at the end of the service road by the BBQ's near the tiled mosaic square. Just look for all the bikes.

To commemorate WED, the Mt. Crosby State School is giving away "green bags"(environmentally friendly alternative to plastic bags),"water sense" brochures, "water sense" cotton bags, recycling magnets and literature. They received approval from the Brisbane City Council for 50 free trees for their school in support of the day. They currently have a scheme for all shools, community groups and council tenants to apply for free trees and it is also their "water sense" campaign promotional items. They are seeking donations of environmentally friendly paper products from companies and are arranging for adequate recycling bins for waste. They are also promoting WED in their flyer which will be circulated to local schools, newspapers/magazines and shopping centres within a 30km radius.

Each year on World Environment Day the UN seeks to focus world attention on the environment, and in particular, on positive programmes that are working towards protecting or restoring the world's natural heritage. To celebrate World Environment Day, the organization Pangaea in Bangladesh organized the World Environment Day Festival 2005 with the participation of the activists and professional class. They arranged an information booth on all previous WED themes and they created 33-art and information installations and paintings illustrating the themes from 1974 to 2005. An art competition for children was part of the event, to fulfill the objective. Hundreds of children participated, including disadvantaged and disabled.In addition, they organized a bicycle rally and distributed leaflets to raise awareness about WED and the role of the public in protecting the environment.
During the closing ceremony the Chittagong Green City Declaration 2005 was presented. The declaration had been finalized by the panelists of the Roundtable Discussion Meeting held on 10 June 2005.

Coastal Development Partnership (CDP) is a non-governmental organization working in the Southwest Coastal Region of Bangladesh. To celebrate WED, the TopEnergy Green Building Forum held a green building conference, to discuss the green building design strategies for Summer- Hot- Winter- Warm region in China, in cooperation with Guangzhou University and South China University of Technology.
Top Energy is a completely open, scientific & technical forum dedicated to people interested in energy efficiency, green building, sustainable development, etc. The fields of discussion included: energy efficiency policies and codes, energy efficiency publicizing, energy technologies, energy simulation & assessment and energy market in China. Particularly, it constitutes a place to discuss China energy efficiency marketing for government, enterprises, and academic circles such as EMC (Energy Management Contract), ESPC (Energy Saving Performance Contract), ESCo and LEEDTM, the green building rating system in Chinese and English, etc. It covers almost every aspect about green building. This internet based academic forum was founded in Oct 2003 and in May 2005 it had about 6,500 members from all around the world, including UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, etc. Of course, the majority of the members comes from China.
The number of members is increasing at a pace of 30-40 persons per day. Until 23 May 2005, the overall browsership was 3,185,232, including 179,363 members. According to TopEnergy survey among the members, 49.5% are academic researchers belonging to universities or other research organizations. 43.2% are engineers, architects, or managers. This means TopEnergy's audience has a high educational background and some influence in the green building research areas. Some of key members log in the website almost every day, and some of informational members (about 1,213 persons) think of TopEnergy as the main source of information on green buildings.
TopEnergy formed several Voluntary Mission Teams, such as Translation Team, Information Collection Team, etc. TopEnergy Web Team translated two books and published 8 articles on academic periodicals. All these works were performed through online communication and cooperation. TopEnergy also organized the four editions of the Green Building Salon, which is a green building seminar, in ShangHai, ChongQing, and Beijing.
The topics focused on several aspects, including: LEED green building rating system in China (ShangHai), Commissioning for Green Buildings (ShangHai), Building Energy Efficiency for Mountainous Areas (ChongQing), Concept & Practice of Zero Energy Buildings in China (Beijing). TopEnergy is striving to become a portal website for green buildings or energy efficiency, and is developing a database for green buildings including all kinds of energy efficiency strategies for building envelope, lighting, tap water, domestic hot water, air conditioning and heating system.

National Safety Council (NSC) is an apex, autonomous and non-profit organization set up in 1966 by the Ministry of Labour, with the overall objective to generate, develop and sustain a voluntary movement on Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) among industries at the national level. It has a network of over 6000 members, comprising industrial and business establishments, institutions, trade union organizations and HSE professionals with 14 state chapters and 29 Action Centers. To achieve its objective, NSC undertakes a wide range of activities such as conferences, training, consultancies, national awareness campaigns, publications and periodicals, promotional materials and information resources. Since 1999, NSC has also started promoting World Environment Day (WED) with an active participation from member industries, chapters and action centers. As part of the efforts to promote the WED campaign, NSC appeals to members to actively celebrate WED and help them by providing a variety of awareness and publicity material on current environmental issues. The WWF-India (Maharashtra State office), in association with the Maharashtra Nature Park, has planned a workshop entitled "Green Mumbaikar", on 5 June. The program will include a nature trail in the Maharashtra Nature Park (a city man made forest, developed by WWF-India on a garbage dump in 1990's), followed by interactive sessions on vermicomposting, paper making and recycling. The following activities were carried out in India to commemorate World Environment Day:

    1. Releasing of a commemorative stamp on Green Cities by the Hon'ble Minister of State for Environment and Forests, along with a brochure and first day cover wherein the selected painting from the competition of children in the five eco cities (a scheme implemented by the Government of India currently) was printed.
    2. Adoption of the Urban Environmental Accords/Green City Declaration by the All India Council of Mayors (a body of 117 Mayors of India) on 5 June 2005 in New Delhi.
    3. Organised a Conference on Green Cities(130 professionals from various interest groups participated)/ Children's Summit on Environment (wherein 110 children from five Indian Eoc cities and Delhi participated) and a day long workshop on electronic waste management (65 participants) in India was organised on 4 June as a collaborative effort of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, German Technical Cooperation, Royal Norwegian Embassy etc.
    4. As a follow up to the above-mentioned activities, an Eco City Expo and a three day Eco city Workshop will be held by the Ministry of Environment and Forests during 3-5 November 2005 in New Delhi with the support of IIT Delhi. This event is expected to bring professional from various walks of life including international experts. A special session for Mayors will be held during the three day event.

Orissa Eco-clubs
The Centre for Environmental Studies in Bhubaneswar, Orissa, India has been celebrating World Environment Day (WED) since 2000. This year, they have formed eco-clubs in 4,500 schools in Orissa State, and the students will undertake various activities such as tree planting and clean-up efforts.

This year the Centre is organising drawing and painting competition, which will be launched on 16 January 2005 and an essay competetion to be launched on 23 January 2005. The competitions will be among school students in the state capital, Bhubaneswar, and the expected number of participants is approximately 600.

The drawing, painting and essay competitions will also be organised in 4,500 eco-club schools, mainly in rural areas. The deadline will be 30 April 2005, and the expected number of participants is 45,0000 students! In addition, some 4,500 students have been requested to make scientific models based on this year's theme Plan For The Planet.

On 5 June 2005, a function will be organised in Bhubaneswar and the Honorable Chief Minister of Orissa is expected to grace the occasion at which an exhibition will be organized to showcase selected entries of the drawing and painting competition, as well as the scientific models.

The Centre is in the process of selecting individuals and organisations who have done good environmental conservation work in the State, and on WED itself 30 individuals will be presented with the "Prakriti Bandhu" (Friend of Environment) award and 30 organisations will be given the "Prakruti Mitra" (Dearest friend of Environment) award. The winners of the competitions will also be awarded.

That's why on World Environment Day 2005, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Tangerang Municipality will measure public vehicles emmisions. On the occasion of World Environment Day, Bangsar Village Shopping Centre is undertaking an environmental campaign, whose objective is to educate and reinforce the concept of recycling. The Shopping Centre sponsored 20,000 specially designed reusable green shopping bags, with the slogan Go Green For The Future Of Our Kids. Storyboards targeted at children are also displayed inside the shopping centre, in order to create awareness of the need to recycle.
To reinforce the message of using used materials, a book recycling effort was carried out. All collected books will be donated to local charities, which adhere to the Bangsar Village Kids for Kids Charity Programme.
To create awareness of the color-coding employed for the sorting of different recyclable items, colored recycling bins were put at key points, with large posters hanging over each bin.
The whole campaign started in early April and will continue until WED. To support the campaign and to create awareness of the project, advertisement in the media was used.

Representatives of the leading daily and weekly newspapers attended the opening ceremony. On 4 June 2005 the Secondary Level Valley Speech Competition Programme was held. 34 schools of the valley participated in the competition with totally 68 representatives. The competition took place at the Namuna Machhindra secondary school Lalitpur Lagankhel. YAEF also distributed posters which carried slogans on different topics, including: water conservation, plastic use reduction, stop chimney brick industries, stop the stone curser industries, etc. The programme was jointly conducted by representative of SAYEN, National Focal point Mr. Deepak Acharya, and YAEF members.
5 June Programme was jointly organized by YAEF and by Environment Cycle Radio (ECR FM). Celebrations started at the city hall in Rastriya Sava Griha Exhibition Road with the Valley Bicycle Rally, with the aim to turn into action World Environment Day slogan. The rally left Lagenkhel and followed Jawalakhel, Pulchowk, Kupondole, Tripereshwor, Sahidgate, Sundharas, Newroad, Bhotahity, Jamal and Gantaghar. The event was inaugurated by the IUCN country representative, Mr. Sagendra Tiwari. The gathering was addressed by YAEF executive chairman of YAEF and by YAEF Chief Advisor Member, Mr. Bharat Jung Rana. YAEF programme coordinator, Mr. Rajendra Maharjan, facilitated the programme. Thereafter the public visited the main chows and places of Kathmandu like Bagbazar, Maitighar, Putalisadak Exhibition Road, Singadurbar; Maitighar Thapathali, etc. The participants finally reached YAEF Head office, where a discussion was organized on the topic "Environment Protection in Nepal: Problems and Solutions". Teachers, students, journalists, and social workers actively participated in the rally. On 6 June, a performance with cultural dances and environmental related songs took place.

To celebrate WED, the Human Development International (HDI) Vanguard Corps for Peace and Development will show a documentary film produced by HDI, entitled "Call in the Wilderness" to schools students and to the community. The film features the importance of mountains as source of energy, air, water and other natural elements. It also shows the destruction, onslaught and encroachment that happened at Mt. Apo (the Philippine's tallest mountain). The exhibition and side events will be held in Galle Butterfly Park (Samanala Uyana) on 5 and 6 June. The chief guests will be the Honorable Minister A.H.M. Fowzie of the Ministry of Environment & Natural Resources & the Deputy Hon. Minister Bandula Basnayake among others.
The government departments such as Ministry of Environment & Natural Resources, National Zoological Department, Sri Lanka Tourist Board, Sri Lanka Customs, Geological Survey and Mines Bureau, Marine Pollution Prevention Authority, Coast Conservation Department, National Aquatic Resources Agency, National Museum, Forest Department, Wildlife Department, Central Environmental Authority, National Biodiversity Secretariat etc. will join SLNF in displaying their exhibition stalls in the exhibition area. SLNF member organisations and non-member environmental organisations will also participate in the exhibition. It is expected that there will be more than 50 exhibition stalls. Full media coverage will be given by the "Sirasa" Radio and Television (MTV) Network.
In addition, side events such as a walk and an art, poster, essay and poetry competition among the schools will be held, as well as a tree planting exercise to restore the marine and coastal habitats destroyed by the Tsunami in Galle District. Other activities will include environmental education programmes for school children, Tsunami survivors and other coastal communities; an environmental and cultural show; an environmental film will be shown, a declaration of a conservation conscious society put forth; a beach cleaning effor; and the production and distribution of an environment day souvenir will also take place on 5 and 6 June on the premises of the Galle Municipal Council. The award ceremony of the National School Art / Essay and Poetry competition will be held on 6 June at 10.00 am at the Galle Municipal Council Hall.

On the occasion of World Environment Day (WED) and under the theme Green Cities, the National Environmental Forum (NEF) launched a Tree Planting Campaign on 5 June under the Pinus carebia Plantation located on 0.25 acres of the University land. This was undertaken in collaboration with its sister organization Hantana Conservation Society (HCS), University of Peradeniya.
Five different indigenous plant species were introduced as pioneers at this initial stage. No undergrowth is found under these Pinus plantation, which extend more than 400 acres. This piece of land would develop as a Pilot site to regain the biodiversity in the area.
NEF is a voluntary community organization, manned by professionals and other citizens qualified in various environment-related disciplines. Among them are senior university academics as well as officers attached to a number of the national and private organizations. Presently we are involved in many environment-related activities in a voluntary capacity in order to investigate and mitigate environmental problems in Sri Lanka. In addition, we also conduct awareness programs in relation to natural resources management particularly for various youth communities.

To mark World Environment Day young people in Mudaharn Municipality will clean up their city and environment. On 3 June 2005 there will be a recycling parade with the participation of various agencies in Mudahan Province, followed by a contest to determine the best recyclers among local schools, goverment offices, banks and hospitals. In addition, there will be displays of local dance and music to attract many people to participate in World Environment Day, 5 June 2005!

Buon Ma Thuot
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) of Vietnam has chosen Buon Ma Thuot city in DakLak province as the national venue for the celebrations of World Environment Day 2005. Several activities are planned, including: a WED ceremony; tree planting and clean-up exercises; the closing ceremony of a convention on environment protection at Ako Dhong Highland Village; a workshop on resources management and environment protection, a senior management meeting on resources and environment between the leaders of MONROE and 5 highland provinces. In addition, WED celebration will be organized throughout Vietnam by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment under the Provincial People Committees. Activities will include workshops, seminars, exhibitions, tree planting initiatives, and various competitions.

The Green Wit Club of the Faculty of Environmental Science at the University of Natural Sciences in Ho Chi Minh city sees WED as an opportunity to celebrate and protect the environment . They have an environmental examination called 'Discover Your Environment'. The purpose of this exam is to encourage people, especially students, to discover their environment, so that they will can improve their knowledge and develop ideas on how they can protect the environment and all living things. The prize and the project are sponsored by various oganizations and companies.
