ST.LUCIA
Castries
The St. Lucia Chapter of the Caribbean Youth Environment
Network (CYEN) has decided to take advantage of World Environment Day
to spearhead efforts to inform and involve the wider St. Lucian public
in environmental and sustainable development issues. CYEN recognizes
the need to protect and preserve the environment and community interaction
in all aspects of environmental management throughout the Caribbean.
The theme for this year's activity is Green Cities Plan for the Planet
. The aim of the programme is to promote the day with the participation
of all sectors of society. It is the belief of CYEN that partnership
should be forged between non-governmental organisations and government.
WED provides an excellent opportunity to promote issues pertaining to
sustainable development and environment and to make the public aware
of the importance of their role and responsibility in the process. Today's
youth are often portrayed in a negative light. They are often defined
as generally lacking initiative, direction and discipline. WED creates
an avenue for young people to demonstrate their interests in vital national
issues. It also provides an opportunity for them to demonstrate their
ability to be creative and well organized.
The CYEN is planning the following activities to commemorate World Environment Day in 2005:
An Environmental Career
Guidance Day, during which students will be given information on the importance of
the environment and on a career in that field.
A seminar on sustainable development issues, focusing on business houses.
Keeping in mind the theme Green Cities - Plan for the Planet, the environmental
problems of the city of Castries will be analyzed and discussed, and feedback
will be given to the relevant authorities.
