As part of their
commitment to reducing pollution and waste prevention, the Community Environment
Alliance we will be hosting "Let's e-cycle" days in Peel to mark World Environment Day.
The event focuses on reducing the generation of e-waste in Peel which has become a prime concern in the community. Individuals and businesses will be able to drop off their used equipment at one of the event locations and get
an overview on the issue of e-waste and its potential impacts. As students constitute the primary consumers of electronic gadgets, they will be engaged in discussions on what the problem is and how we can address it to make the community safe, healthy and sustainable. In this vein, there will be a student contest on the subject: Electronic waste : Present and future: Am I Doing It Right? Students have to identify key concerns around e-waste and provide a potentially viable solution to deal with it. Students can submit entries in visual, collage or written format. Three winners will
be selected from three categories -- elementary, middle and high school -- and will receive prizes and recognition.

On the occasion of WED, EDAW experts will present a panel discussion on "Parks as Urban
Regenerators" to address the challenges and benefits of sustainable development of planned
green space in urban environments. This panel is of direct benefit and interest to the
WED participants, because it is tied to both the environmental well being and the

Leave it to food-loving San Francisco to come up with more than 100 taste-tempting ways to
help the environment. That's the number of restaurants who participated in the numerous
events in San Francisco from 1 to 5 June to observe United Nations World Environment Day.
The restaurants focused attention on sustainable cuisine by offering at least one dish
made entirely with organic, locally produced ingredients. Participants ranged from Pauline's
Pizza, in the Mission District, to higher-end spots like Slanted Door and Absinthe.
The celebration included more than 150 community events. On 1 June, in Japan town, Donna
Keiko Ozawa, an artist, began assembling an art installation of thousands of disposable
wooden chopsticks. A fashion show on June 4 had Bono's new Edun line of environmentally
friendly clothing, couture by Katherine Hamnett and a lounge with organic beauty stations.
More than 25 films, introduced by celebrities like Al Gore and Alice Waters, were shown
during an environmental film festival at the Castro Theater on 1 to 5 June. And at the
free Green Cities Expo, June 3 to 5 at Fort Mason, 114 businesses and organizations
showed products like earth-safe cleaning supplies and wallets made of recycled rubber.
The mayors of London, Shanghai and more than 50 other cities signed accords for
"green cities" at City Hall on 5 June.
