AWE holds an Environment Week Exhibition each year to coincide with World Environment Day. The exhibition is an excellent opportunity to raise staff awareness on environmental issues and what they themselves can do to help preserve and protect the environment at work and at home. We are a fairly large company, with over 4,000 staff and contractors, and our sites cover hundreds of acres involving a wide range of operations. Like any other large industrial complex we are aware that some of our operations can have the potential to harm the environment and we therefore take every precaution to ensure that this does not happen.Prior to the exhibition we hold a children’s environmental poster competition (with prizes) and it is amazing to see the children’s interpretation on how they see their environment. All the entries are displayed at the exhibition. Outside organisations such as local Wildlife Trusts and Local Authorities are invited to join us and work well alongside our own people. We also hold a competition with environmentally friendly prizes such as bikes, birdhouses, energy-saving light bulbs, hampers containing environmentally friendly household and free trade products. A popular attraction is also the freebies made from recycled products such as rulers, key rings, and coasters made from recycled vending cups and notepads made from recycled paper. We also hold organised Flower, Bird and Heritage walks, our sites are not just industrial but also have a diverse range of habitats such as woodlands and ponds and June is a good month to see these areas in all their beauty.
