Gauteng Gautrain is Africa’s first world-class, modern rapid rail network for Gauteng Province, South Africa. An environmental management plan monitors Gautrain’s construction impact on natural resources and urban infrastructure. Construction for Gautrain’s stations comes with felling of trees, many of which are non-indigenous. For each of the trees removed, the Gautrain project team will plant three indigenous trees in areas specified by Johannesburg City Parks.
To commemorate World Environment Day 2007, Gautrain displayed an art exhibition with a theme borrowed from Cheryl Gage, a community artist: The Wolf in the Forest.Cheryl said of the exhibition “This tells my story of being an alien or outcast due to my history. On the occasion of World Environment Day 2007, Roots & Shoots clubs promoted awareness about environmental issues by organizing educational activities for the public in Dar es Salaam and Mkuranga. This was in coordination with over 25 school clubs on three projects. The first project saw up to 5000 trees planted on school grounds and at students’ homes, the second project was an essay competition for primary and secondary school students, who had an opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings about what they can do to preserve the environment, and the third project was an environmental fair to educate the public about current environmental issues.
Roots & Shoots provided school clubs with enough saplings to plant on their school grounds and for each Roots & Shoots member to plant at their home. Each student was also assigned the task of writing an essay about the ways in which they can personally take action to preserve the environment. Each club designed an educational poster for a community-wide environmental fair on 26 May. The clubs conducted a small research project about any environmental issue and then they were provided with materials to develop a poster which was supposed to be an original artwork. The posters were exhibited at the fair. Roots & Shoots also created and distributed an environmental brochure for all those attending the fair. The environmental fair moved to Mkuranga on 2 June.
