Environmental matters have always been a part of the agenda of the Organization of Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). On the occasion of World Environment Day 2007, the Office of the Coordinator of OSCE Economic and Environmental Activities, located at the OSCE Secretariat in Vienna, organized for the permanent representatives of its 56 participating states a study visit to the European centre of renewable energy in the city of Güssing, Austria. The City Council of Güssing decided in 1990 to gradually phase out fossil energy and to move the city towards a concept of renewable and sustainable energy supply. Güssing became famous for its "energy-autarchy", based 100 % on renewable energy. The city thus represents an ideal showcase on how to address environmental threats caused by fossil energies and how feasible, cost-effective and economically sound technologies can lead to a successful and sustainable global concept, based on the interaction among partners and the local community. The daytrip included a visit to a biomass plant, a photovoltaic plant and a school for solar energy.

Erlangen
To mark World Environment Day 2007 a project in the year of environment of the city of Erlangen was launched. Two blocks of ice were placed at the center of Erlangen (Hugenottenplatz) - one in a house isolated only according standard by law, the other one is isolated according to a modern standard - the passive house standard. Everyone can join the project by giving his estimate of how fast the ice-blocks melt. The estimate was carried out by filling in a form on the website: www.erlangen.de/eisblockwette (Of course the melting of the ice in the standard house is much faster). The ice block-bet (Eisblockwette) is a symbol that better energy standards help to protect the climate. On 5 June the first part of the bet was announced. The mayor of the city gave the first price to the winner: a bicycle. The bet continues until everybody can give his estimate of how many liters of water were measured in the less well isolated house? One can even join from anywhere in the world using the internet: The last question of the bet will be answered on 1 December: How many days will be needed for the ice in the better insulated house (passive-house) to completely melt? Join our project by visiting the homepage.
