To celebrate World Environment Day 2008, Kawana Shoppingworld hosted a week of awareness from 4 June to 11 June with the main focus being on recycling. Their aim was to encourage customers to bring in recyclable items to their "Recycle Centre" including cardboard paper, mobile phones, printer cartridges. In exchange for dropping off their recyclables, customers were given an entry form for their chance to win prizes. As part of World Environment Week, Kawana Shoppingworld also printed all materials on 100% recycled paper, highlighted Mirvac's national sustainability commitment, created a signage highlighting important facts about recycling, approached local media outlets and local schools for support in promoting World Environment Week.

In support of World Environment Day 2008, Clean Up the World invited its member organisations around the globe to conduct environmental activities with a focus on climate change. Activities such as cleaning up local parks and waterways, planting trees, conducting walk to school or work days or organising environmental education exercises were undertaken. Members registered their local activities with United Nations Environment Programme.
Clean Up the World is a not-for-profit, non-government, apolitical organisation that unites communities with a common focus to clean up the world.
Now celebrating its 16th year, Clean Up the World, held in conjunction with United Nations Environment Programme, mobilises an estimated 35 million volunteers from 120 countries annually making it one of the largest community based environmental campaigns in the world.
While its Member’s activities can be conducted throughout the year, including World Environment Day, Clean Up the World’s flagship event is Clean Up the World Weekend, 19-21 September 2008. Groups in any city, town or village across the globe can get involved by becoming a Clean Up the World Member.

Noida Rickshaw is a modified tricycle which is used extensively as a mode of transport for carrying passengers and luggage in India. There are eight million Rickshaws in the country. This is a vehicle with Zero Carbon Emission. Rickshaw Bank is a flagship programme by the Centre for Rural Development (CRD) that provides a means of self-employment for the poor in community. CRD believes that with the reality of Global Warming, Rickshaw is the best mode of transport for short distances. To promote this, CRD is working to issue an asset-based loan to rickshaw pullers repayable through a minimum installment rate on daily basis. CRD along with Punjab National Bank and American India Foundation launched the Rickshaw Bank project on 4 June 2008, in support of World Environment Day.

To celebrate World Environment Day 2008, 3rd grade students from Sekolah Mutiara Harapan were tasked to prepare brochures with tips on how to save water and electricity. 4th Grade and 5th Grade students were monitoring their homes to determine daily and weekly usage of water and electricity respectively. They did this for a few weeks to determine a baseline of usage. Students and their parents implemented some “savings” initiatives, and continued to monitor usage. Students presented, reports to show the effects of saving within their household. They started the same programme on their "blocks". Brochures were passed out, monitoring is continuing, and the student whose "block" saves the most, will be recognized.

Wellington To celebrate World Environment Day 2008, New Zealand Ministry for the Environment held an International Children's Painting Competition Exhibition, as part of World Environment Day celebrations. The International Children's Painting Competition on the Environment is organized annually by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the Japan-based Foundation for Global Peace and Environment (FGPE), Bayer and Nikon Corporation. The competition has been held since 1991 and has received over 190,000 entries from children in over 100 countries. The 2007/2008 competition was open from 24 September 2007 to 15 January 2008. The 2007/2008 competition focused on “Climate Change: actions we can take now to reduce our negative impact” and attracted entries worldwide, including 49 entries from New Zealand. The children's paintings focus on actions to reduce climate change such as using renewable energy, introducing energy saving light bulbs at home, sharing vehicles and using public transport, and planting trees.
During the week of World Environment Day an exhibition at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa (Te Papa) in Wellington, displayed 50 of these global and regional paintings. The free exhibition was housed at Te Papa's 'Inspiration Station' from Friday 30 May to Sunday 8 June and was open to all members of the public.

To celebrate World Environment Day 2008, New Zealand Minister for the Environment presented Green Ribbon Awards in recognition to the outstanding contributions of individuals, organizations and businesses to sustaining, protecting and enhancing New Zealand's environment. 2008 marks the 18th year the awards have run. Award recipients were recognized at a special ceremony at the Wellington Town hall on Tuesday 3 June. The Green Ribbon Awards acknowledged individuals, organizations, and businesses who are helping to 'kick the carbon habit' through their environmental efforts.

To celebrate World Environment Day 2008, New Zealand Ministry for the Environment held a Junk to Green Funk Art Auction. 31 Trade Aid shops around New Zealand approached a local artist to create a piece of work that converts junk into a piece of art. The artwork was showcased in Trade Aid shops during the Fair Trade Fortnight, 3 May to 18 May 2008. After the Fair Trade Fortnight the artwork was sold at an auction from 4.30pm on Tuesday 3 June at the Wellington Town Hall, prior to the Green Ribbon Award ceremony. The auction raised money for environmental education in New Zealand. The artwork was made from discarded and recycled materials, therefore reducing the affect the pieces have on the environment and aligning with the theme of world Environment Day 2008 “Kick the Carbon Habit”.

To celebrate World Environment Day 2008, the Ministry for the Environment in partnership with the Natural World Museum, the United Nations Environment programme and Te Papa presented Art for the Environment: Moving Towards a Balanced Earth, an art exhibition featuring works of art from 25 artists representing 17 countries. The free exhibition was housed at Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa (Te Papa) in Wellington and was open to all members of the public. The exhibition opened on World Environment Day, 5 June, and ran until 7 June. The exhibition was designed to utilize the universal language of art as a catalyst to unite people in action and thought, and to empower individuals, communities, and leaders to focus on environmental values across social, economic and political realms. The exhibited art had an over-arching climate change theme.
