17 June 2009 Kenya Mx marks World Environment day In a bid to protect the natural environment from destruction or pollution, Kenya motocross riders joined masses across the globe in observing the auspicious World Environment Day (WED). The Day fell on June 5 but motocross riders dedicated the Fourth Round of the Kenya National Motocross Championship series to the noble tree-planting exercise at Jamhuri Park Racetrack on Sunday, June 7, 2009. To sustain the slogan "Ride Green, over 30riders (as seen in the picture) engaged in the rare activity to conserve the environment with a pep talk sensitizing them on the importance of the plan.”Each rider was given an opportunity to plant and own trees; and nourish them for the rest of the year," Maina Muturi, the Kenya Motor Sports Federation (KMSF) Chairman said. Muturi, who is also the Vice Chairman of Africa Motorcycle Union (AMU)-in charge of environment- said riders will plant 1000 trees by the end of the year 2009. Nairobi

Ol Kalou — All is set for the Lake Olbolosat Road race, with more than 1,000 runners set to battle it out in the morning cold along Nyahururu’s Nairobi Highway on World Environment Day 5th June, 2009.
At stake will be Kenya's titles in the men and women's races of the 10 KM Road race. The event is the host of this year’s World Environment Day in Central Province and is expected to be graced by the PC Justa Rugut and renowned Olympic and London marathon World record Samuel Wanjiru.                 .
The event has received numerous support from Suera Flowers who are the official sponsors of the environmental race, others are Athletics Kenya, NEMA & Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports.
According to the event organizers George Muchina the Communications Director of Green Media Limited says the event is expected to attract a number of top athletes and is so far the only race of its kind in the continent. The event will bring together communities to plant trees and run at the same time.
“Lake Olbolosat is on its deathbed as aresult of logging and deforestation coupled with receding water levels our aim will be to showcase that we can indeed do something about climate change through sports. We came up with the event to highlight the urgency to safeguard our water masses and consequences of climate change.
The event is being organized by Suera Flowers in support of the climate change awareness campaign of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). The objective is to plant 50,000 trees in a single sport event, create fun and enjoyment for ALL through tree planting and create public awareness about climate change to individual entries and corporate team entries.
Invited current and former Kenyan national team and olympic athletes will sign up during the event as climate crusaders to speak against Climate change.
Proceeds will go to water projects to help communities in the Lake Olbolosat and Nyandarua region, and especially areas which have suffered as a result of the recent unrest in Kenya.
GA_googleFillSlot( "AllAfrica_Story_InsetB" ); Peter Mathu, Athletics Kenya Nyandarua Branch official who is chairing the organizing committee says the Lake Olbolosat race is expected to gain prominence because it is a tough race with top class athletes expected to run at high attitude.
The Lake Olbolosat is set to become the signature annual sports event that will bring together runners and climate change enthusiasts from all over the country as well as foreign participants to Ol Kalou a beautiful part of the countryside of Kenya and home of the greatest distance runners in the world.
The theme chosen by the UN Environment Program (UNEP), which coordinates the day on 5 June on behalf of the UN system and the peoples of the world, will be 'Your Planet Needs You-Unite to Combat Climate Change'.
It reflects the urgency for nations to agree on a new agreement at the crucial climate convention meeting in Copenhagen some 180 days later in the year, and the links with overcoming poverty and improved management of forests.

LIBYA

Tripoli
As part of their World Environment Day 2009 celebrations, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Libya, the Environment General Authority, Tripoli Development Authority and the Scouts movement, organized a large public awareness raising event in Tripoli’s famous Green Square, entitled “Make Green Square Greener.”
Hundreds of Scouts gathered in Green Square for the event, some travelling as far as 180km to take part. They participated in a series of quizzes and competitions, with World Environment Day t-shirts and plants offered as prizes. Meanwhile, passers-by were handed out leaflets outlining World Environment Day and explaining ten simple steps for reducing individual carbon emissions.
The event took its inspiration from the global theme for this year’s World Environment Day, “Your Planet Needs You, UNite to Combat Climate Change”, which called upon governments and their citizens to unify in their efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
A special emphasis was placed on individual responsibility for climate change. The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon highlighted in his speech to mark the occasion that “although individual decisions may seem small in the face of global threats and trends, when billions of people join forces in common purpose we can make a tremendous difference.”
In addition to this, attention was focused on the upcoming Copenhagen Climate Change Conference, scheduled to take place in December 2009. The international conference is intended to expand upon climate change commitments made at the Kyoto Protocol, and will bring together thousands of individuals from governments, observer organizations and the international media.
Mr. Brian Gleeson, UNDP Resident Representative, delivered a speech which not only called upon government commitment at Copenhagen, but also urged individual’s to respond to the pressing issue of global climate change. He emphasized that international agreements are powerless if realities do not change on the ground.
A key concern in Libya is the need to offer individuals more opportunities to chose a lower carbon lifestyle, Mr. Gleeson was adamant that “UNDP is keen to take a lead in spreading environmental awareness, but it is not enough to urge people to recycle when there are not facilities for recycling. It is not enough to urge extol the virtues of public transport, when vast areas of the city has no access to it. We cannot encourage people to walk when there are no safe pedestrian crossings and well-paved footpaths.”
For the Scouts gathered at Green Square, their government and other states’ responses to climate change will have a decisive impact upon their futures and that of their children. Africa stands to be worst affected by climate change, with an estimated 75 to 250 million individuals likely to be affected by severe water shortages by 2020 if significant action is not taken. UNDP Libya hopes that their active involvement in climate change issues will be matched in the international arena and has pledged to continue campaigning for greater attention to the Copenhagen Agreement.

World Environment Day at the Johannesburg Zoo

On Friday 5 June Johannesburg Zoo celebrates World Environment Day in association with Rand Water, Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), Delta Environment Centre, Sci-Bono, Eco-Access and the Miss Earth Organisation. The Johannesburg Zoo is the host and has planned a number of activities aimed at educating and inspiring visitors to preserve the environment and minimise their environmental footprint. Our partners share our vision and will engage learners accordingly. The main purpose of the day is creating awareness about biodiversity and biodiversity issues. The zoo has invited 3000 learners including 4 schools with learners with special educational needs (LESN) to join the celebrations. The Johannesburg Zoo will have seven stalls, viz, Alpha section’s stall will raise awareness and discuss conservation issues facing Frogs and Gorillas through the Johannesburg Zoo’s Amphibian and Gorilla conservation projects, Charlie section’s stall will show-case carnivores using bio facts such as body coverings and skulls where the young visitors can have a hands on experience with meat-eaters, Delta section’s stall will give the visitors a chance to identify animals “poo” by matching dung to a list of animal names, Stores stall will display the different types of animal feed and allow visitors to taste it, horticulture’s stall will show kids how to plant trees. Our partners will also engage the visitors in activities that relates to preservation of the environment. The Miss Earth South Africa finalists will spend time with the young visitors talking about conservation issues and playing games. The celebrations will start from 09h00 and run until 12h30.

We can all do our part to protect the planet.

Johannesburg Zoo active in UNEP’s plant a tree campaign

The United Nations designated 5 June as World Environment Day to deepen public awareness of the environment and enhance political attention and action. That date recalls the opening day of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (Stockholm 1972), which led to the establishment of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). The world environment day is hosted every year by a different city. This year’s host country is Mexico which reflects the growing role of the Latin American country in the fight against climate change.

The theme of this year’s world environment day is “Your Planet Needs You! Unite to Combat Climate Change” and reflects the urgency for nations to agree on a new deal at the crucial climate convention meeting in Copenhagen in about 180 days.

You can also help achieve UNEP’s Billion Tree Campaign target of planting seven billion trees – one for every person on the planet - by the end of this year. Three billon trees have been planted. Five billion are pledged. Further to the biodiversity awareness activities mentioned above, the Johannesburg Zoo actively engages in the plant a tree project and will therefore plant 21 trees specifically on World Environment Day. So far the zoo has planted 24 trees this year.

The Johannesburg Zoo strives to be Gauteng’s environmental and wildlife destination of choice and aims to inspire people to appreciate wildlife by providing an educational and recreational facility for all visitors. We especially place importance on four key pillars: conservation, recreation, education and research. The zoo houses 1868 animals, comprising 365 species in 54 hectares. It places emphasis on ensuring a high standard of animal care and welfare including nutrition, enrichment, husbandry and medical care. Moreover the zoo is involved in many conservation programmes such as The Wattled Crane Recovery Program, Amphibian Conservation Project, and Spectacled Bear, Emperor Tamarin and Red-bellied Lemur international co-operative breeding programmes.

TANZANIA

Tabora Town

In Tanzania, the World Environment Day was marked nationally in Tabora town where the guest of honour was Hon Dr. Ally Mohamed Shein, the Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania. Tabora town is the nearest city to the Mbola Millennium Villages site.
At the event, the Mbola Millennium Villages project had the opportunity to highlight local environmental efforts. MEMBO (Maendeleo Endelevu Mbola or literally Mbola Sustainable Development) group participated in the Uyui pavilion to demonstrate what they are doing to conserve the environment through tree planting and conservation as well as processing local forest fruits into edible products like juices, jams, wines, pickles, etc. Processing local fruits allows the community to be aware of the many valuable trees available in their areas, covered by Miombo woodlands, and thereby helps to teach the Mbola community to avoid the wild fires and unsustainable trees cutting that is normally done when opening more agricultural land or providing fuelwood for curing tobacco, timber production, and charcoal making.
The Project also had an opportunity to display various solar charged lanterns and modern cook stoves which are in the process of being introduced and tested in Mbola. The efficiency of the modern cook stoves reduces air pollution and cuts consumption of charcoal.
Sandy Eapen, a New York-based Millennium Villages Project staff member who is in Tabora for three months on special assignment on solar lanterns, also attended the event. She said, "It was very exciting to experience World Environment Day here. I was really impressed with both the diversity of environmental issues promoted by various community organizations and the enthusiasm from people of all ages in learning about conserving the environment, in areas of energy, agriculture, water, and more. For example, many people were interested in knowing how to purchase the solar lanterns and cook stoves that MVP was introducing into the villages after hearing about their benefits. Having the presence of the Vice President of Tanzania, who took the time to visit all the booths, also helped signify to the community the importance of the day."
