Sarajevo
Related to the essence of trail running, NGO Marathoners are focused on environmental awareness. As advocates of a greener planet, we feel that the responsibility of NGO Marathon Sarajevo is to give publicity, through our events, to companies and associations that produce earth- friendly products and promote a healthy community. Having this in mind, to mark World Environment Day we are going to organize a trail race called "RUN TO THE HILLS" 10K. Going green is important for everyone and we are using World Environment Day to organize the first Bosnian trail race in the beautiful Olympic Mountains. The course of the race will lead through unique forest roads that are hilly and challenging. This combination of beauty and a passion for running will make the trail race an unforgettable experience for all participants. The purpose of the event is to increase awareness and provide inspiration and encouragement for environment protection and a healthy life style. According to our experience in the organization of similar events, we expect around 200 runners from nearly all of the European countries. Date:12:00 (local time).

Tuzla

CEETZ held a street action to promote WED, including a press conference to promote eco-awareness. The action was done in cooperation with local NGOs, media and high schools. Our message focused on those resulting from cooperation with two simultaneous regional efforts: As a member (and the main coordinator) of "Ekoalicija", a coalition of eco-oriented NGOs in northeastern B&H, CEETZ (cooperating with other local NGOs and high schools) did its part in Tuzla by distributing leaflets promoting the public's right to information and public participation, as well as a petition asking each municipality to nominate a specific person to be in charge of distributing eco-information to local citizens (about 700 signatures from Tuzla). As a member of "Energija", an informal group of eco-NGOs across B&H working on energy policies, CEETZ distributed various promotional materials about climate change to the public, including postcards targeted to the responsible energy ministers, signed by about 400 citizens.

"Ekoalicija" is a coalition of eco-oriented NGOs, representing perspectives from 39 members in 19 municipalities in north-eastern B&H. To commemorate WED 2009, it coordinated the efforts of its members to inform the public about their rights to both information access and public participation. Promotional radio spots were aired on stations across the region, calling on citizens to support their local NGOs and calling on local government to prioritize environmental issues more. 28 coalition members in 10 cities distributed leaflets informing both ordinary citizens and local authorities of how to improve democratization at a local level, focusing on its importance for environmental policies. Additionally, these organizations called on the public to sign a petition (about 3800 signatures received in total) as well as asking municipalities to each nominate a specific person to be in charge of distributing eco-information to local citizens; this way communication channels would become more open, which will improve the situation greatly.

To celebrate the World Environment Day 2009, ENO Programme will organize a special tree planting day. Schools will plant trees at midday, in every corner of the world. The first trees will be planted at noon in Oceania. Following the Sun, new trees will be put to earth in Asia, Europe and Africa. Finally this chain of trees will reach Americas. Globe has turned on its axis. Trees will be planted on 22 May. This day is also known as World Biodiversity Day. Tree planting is important for us. Firstly, it reminds us of the nature and the importance of environmental protection. Secondly, it is a symbol for the international co-operation. This event has become a success. Last year 2,000 schools in 122 countries planted 300,000 trees around ENO Tree Planting Day. We have also other activities: a special tree planting play (translated into over 40 languages!), tree planting songs etc.

Torun
“Breakfast On The Grass” – World Environment Day in Torun, Poland, 5 -6 June, is a recreational educational picnic on genuine green grass in the centre of a gothic old town. The event is organized by the Sustainable Development Workshop Foundation in cooperation with the Municipal Council of Torun and Torun Pacific.

The main aim of the project is drawing the attention of the inhabitants of Torun to the necessity of joint activities for the protection of the environment and climate, and raising knowledge levels on preventing climatic changes. Following the idea of 3R: reduce, recycle, reuse, “a stage with climate COP 14” will be erected, made of advertisement banners left after the Climate Change Conference COP 14 in Poznan. The participants of the event will also be given reusable “climate” bags.

An impressive origami installation – an everyday object and an element of interior decor - will be created out of newspapers and leaflets.
The participants will have an opportunity to taste ecological food from local farmers and producers and to see a showing of environmental commercials presenting the most interesting environmental social campaigns.

The participants will have a chance to talk face to face to well-known figures during a Living Library. Among our guests there will be: an organic food producer, a worker for voluntary causes, a nature photographer, and an orthodox environmentalist.

Together with two NGOs, the agency runs a program for the education of young people, government organizations, banks and private companies to train on the importance of the re-use and restoration of the products of ICT, portable telephones and component re-use. Through awareness campaigns, the NGOs motivate companies to donate their out- of -use electric/electronic equipments to them. The company collects the donated waste and pays the NGOs. These funds finance programs related to children and youth from disadvantaged families and also with physical handicaps. This year, KBR's Green IMPACT event will take the form of a week of information and activities across five continents to promote KBR's corporate commitment to environmental stewardship. Starting Monday 1 June, each day will carry a different environmental topic, with each topic and its related activities put into the context of the unifying theme of climate change. Our events will be both hands-on and information-based, covering the subjects of ecology and biodiversity, energy efficiency, water resources, waste reduction and recycling and carbon footprints. Our events will culminate on Friday 5 June for World Environment Day. The aim of this event is to promote awareness and bring about positive change, however small, in all areas of environment and sustainability.   • Switch off electrical appliances and lights;
  • Use only one paper towel to dry hands;
  • As a centre we produce huge amounts of waste, and one of the biggest creators of waste is food packaging. To reduce this on WED all staff will come together to see how much of this waste can be reduced in our welfare area.  Where possible staff will bring lunch in Tupperware dishes;
  • The amount of potential waste created at point of sale, such as extra napkins, bags, cup holders, extra sugar or milk will be reduced;
  • Newspapers will be shared at break by communicating with other staff members;
  • Bags for Life will be used and staff will refuse unnecessary carrier bags while making purchases on breaks;
  • Paper towels will be used only where necessary. And only ONE!!!!! ;
  • Plastic forks, knives, cups etc will not be used where we have utensils and glasses provided in welfare areas. Food product in packaging which can be reused will be washed and taken home for reuse;
  • Everybody will Think! Before they Bin it!!!! ;
  • At the end of day on 5 Jue we will be doing a weigh in of the bags from the staff welfare area, to compare against our benchmark weight, this will give us a measure of exactly how much waste we reduced.

Norwich
Norwich children under the age of 13 are busy preparing for an environment gathering at St Gregory's Centre for the Arts on 6 June. Children will be telling stories, weaving, painting and playing games, 95% of materials will be what would have been seen as rubbish and thrown away.  As well as this there is a swap table for children to bring toys they no longer want, a communal painting to get involved with and lots of information about what Norwich Children are doing to help the environment. We hope that this is the launch of an annual day where Norfolk children and young people can come together to share ideas, worries, and hopes as well as learn from each other and have fun. Most importantly is that this is a day where children organize and prepare and lead the activities. This event is organized by Norwich Woodcraft Folk with the support of the Norfolk UN Association.

Cowdenbeath
Beath High School and feeder primary schools have got together to create a very special day to welcome pupils who will be starting their secondary education this summer. The 'Earth Conference' event will pull together specialist staff from both primary and secondary sectors as well as local and national agencies to illustrate the importance of protecting our environment. With speakers, workshops, an 'Earth Village' market place and a debate, the organizers hope to harness the pupils' imagination and encourage them to commit to a greener lifestyle. Over 200 pupils will each be working on a particular eco them (based on the Eco-schools model) and groups of pupils from each school will be asked to present their findings to inform their fellow delegates. This promises to be a highly thought-provoking, interactive conference - hopefully the first of many (possibly annual) events
