The Proposed Soroptimist International of Newton in conjunction with Nature Seekers Incorporated will conduct an educational turtle watching visit to commemorate World Environment Day 2009. This trip will occur on Saturday 6 June, to one of the nesting areas of the endangered leatherback turtles. Every year hundreds of leatherback turtles arrive on the shores of Trinidad and Tobago to lay their eggs. Currently these turtles face grave threats to their existence in the forms of habitat destruction, pollution, disease and overexploitation. One new threat that has recently emerged is the impact of climate change which can result in changing the sex ratios of these animals and affect future reproduction. We believe that every effort to inform and to educate, despite its magnitude has the ability to make an impact. Our initiative is not only meant to increase awareness about the Proposed Soroptimist International Club of Newtown and World Environment Day, we also believe that understanding the impact of climate change on turtles and emphasizing the importance of local buy in to the preservation of all wildlife are of utmost importance.
