WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY HOST CITY: Omaha, NE

Click to View Larger LogoOmaha has been chosen by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) as the host city for the North American celebrations of World Environment Day 2009. This year's theme is "UNite to Combat Climate Change." During the period between Earth Day (April 22) and World Environment Day (June 5), events throughout the community will highlight resources, initiatives and methods that promote low carbon economies and lifestyle such as: improved energy efficiency, alternative energy sources, forest conservation and eco-friendly consumption. The selection of Omaha reflects the city's commitment to environmental and sustainability issues. This commitment is demonstrated by the creation of the Green Omaha Coalition, which is a partnership of public agencies, non-profit groups and private organizations dedicated to promoting a healthy, sustainable community through partnerships, policy, and smart solutions; and by Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey's signing of the U.S. Conference of Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. In addition, Omaha was recently ranked 25th nationally in SustainLane's 2008 U.S. Cities Sustainability Rankings. Join in the celebrations by checking our calendar of events

Students began their 2008-09 school year by creating the Dimensions Green Initiative. They have used this last year to learn and celebrate The Year of Planet Earth in many ways. We are closing out this time by celebrating World Environment Day. Our "green" students have created an informational board that helps to explain this years theme, "Your Planet Needs You-UNite To Combat Climate Change. They will contribute to that theme by taking inventory of the items that they have kept out of our landfill systems including: ink cartridges, alkaline batteries, foil pouches, magazines and commingled recycling (an ongoing student program since 2005). Our students hope their small efforts will amount to a big difference in the global environment and will inspire others to work towards some positive changes in negative environmental impact of others.

In honor of World Environment Day, Airbus Americas is focusing on ways to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by holding an "Eco-Auto" event across all sites in the U.S. Personal vehicles make up a significant portion of the greenhouse gases coming from the transportation sector, and carbon dioxide is the main greenhouse gas that is emitted from a car's tailpipe. Since a large number of Airbus employees commute to work in their cars, one way to reduce our environmental impact is by making sure their vehicles are getting the best mileage possible. To help us with this we have arranged for an American Automobile Association auto efficiency expert to visit and give a presentation on the topic. Handy tire gauges will be distributed to employees to assist them in monitoring and maintaining proper tire pressure. Several Airbus sites have also arranged for car dealers to demo their new fuel efficient vehicles.
