WED in Korea: Recycling and Games on Food Waste
The Korea Ministry of Environment hosted WED celebrations in the city of Daegu on 5 June 2013 at the Daegu City Arboretum. Renovated from a landfill, the Arboretum is a dedicated environment-friendly space. Upon the Ministry’s request, the UNEP National Committee for the Republic of Korea (UNEP NatCom) set up a booth in the space to inform the public about food waste, food loss and hunger, and different ways to recycle and up-cycle waste materials.

In China, Special Stamps and Postcards Issued on WED

In the UK, Choir Sings for the Environment
On Saturday 8 June, Shakti Sings, a 200 strong, national choir performed its first live performance at the Hythe Centre Staines.  The performance, celebrating World Environment Day, was highlighted by harmonious and uplifting earth songs inspired  by many cultures. The renowned leader of the choir, Susie Ro Prater showed enormous energy and had the whole audience, including the city mayor, who was the guest of honor, joining in the final song.

Travelers View WED Message in Beijing
As World Environment Day (WED) celebrations took place throughout June around the world, WED messages on the 2013 theme have been spread in traditional and non-traditional ways. In Beijing Capital Airport, UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner’s video message for WED was featured on a giant information screen. The video appeared once an hour, from 5 to 16 June 2013, spreading the word on WED to thousands of travelers and passersby.

UNEP joins partners to plant 1,000 trees at the Kinale Forest on World Environment Day
On 5 June 2013,UNEP Nairobi staff teamed up with an array of public and private sector partners to plant 1,000 trees in celebration of World Environment Day at an event hosted by the youth groups Kijabe Environment Volunteers (KENVO) and the Global Peace Foundation Kenya. The partners included East Africa Breweries, Safaricom, Kenya Commercial Bank, Unilever, Tetra Pak, Bamburi Cement, Kenya Forest Services, and the Offices of the Kiambu County Governor and County Commissioner.

WED on Benetton Live Windows and Media-Walls
Live Windows celebrates WED this 5 June 2013 with multimedia displays on the campaign theme in Benetton flagship store windows and media walls worldwide. The Live Windows Project, conceived to create a new language between people and retail space, is an initiative by Fabrica, Benetton’s communication research center and talent incubator. Through its network of prominent educational and cultural institutions, Live Windows promotes young talented designers and gives them a venue to showcase their creations.

ICIMOD Celebrates WED with Dialogue and Photo Contest in Nepal and Pakistan
The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) celebrated WED 2013 with several events. This included a Dialogue Forum in Nepal led by Dr Jangannath Adhikari from the Australian National University and an announcement of the winners of the ICIMOD Digital Photo Contest in Pakistan.  The photo contest was based on the theme ‘Water and Life’, chosen to coincide with the United Nation’s International Year of Water Cooperation 2013.

UNEP Goodwill Ambassador for Kenya Launches Initiative To reduce Food Waste
Food wastage has consequences on hunger and poverty, nutrition, healyh, income generation and economic growth in Kenya. To alleviate this problem, Suzanna Owiyo, recently appointed UNEP’s National Goodwill Ambassador, has come up with an initiative known as “Soko Bila Waste - Every little thing Counts”, aimed at sensitizing the vendors, consumers and farmers on the importance of reducing food wastage from the various levels of the distribution chain.
