Conservation, Fresh Water, Marine and Coastal Areas
Summary of Achievements:
Rahat Najam has been working in the field of conservation particularly in wetlands conservation for more than 10 years. When she started this activity there were very few people working in this field in Pakistan and almost no females in the wetlands conservation. This is why she initiated to involve the local female villagers, who have to collect and fetch water for drinking, washing and cooking; in the wetlands conservation and making them understand the importance of the wetlands. She also carried research activities in relation to wetlands with reference to Colonial water birds and a three year research project funded by EU. Among the achievements of her career in the field of wetlands conservation is the identification under the Ramsar Convention of the Indus Delta (472,800 ha.), the Rann of Kutchh (566375 ha) and the Deh Akro II (20500 ha) sites.
Rahat Najam holds a Master in Applied botany from Pakistan and is currently working for the WWF – Pakistan.
