SPECIAL AND PARALLEL EVENTS

UNEP is planning a series of special events and activities to take place during the World Summit in Johannesburg. Provisional calendar.

Some of the key events at WSSD that UNEP will be contributing to include:

Official UNEP Side Event

Cultural Diversity, Biodiversity for Sustainable Development.
Date : 3 September 13:15 -14:45
Venue : Sandton Sun and Towers Intercontinental, Mareola South Room

This round table is being organized jointly with UNESCO. Participants will include Heads of State, Nobel Prize laureates, and other distinguished personalities.Following introductory speeches, the round table will include short interventions from five Heads of State from different regions of the world, comments by invited panelists, questions and comments from the floor, synthesis by the moderator of the round table and closure.

UNEP Parallel Events

Energy for Sustainable Development
Date : 30 August
Venue : John Maree Auditorium, ESKO Convention Centre, Midrand

UNEP, the International Energy Agency (IEA), and the South African electric utility ESKOM are conducting a full day side event on energy for sustainable development at the Eskom Convention Centre in Midrand on August 30th. The purpose is to present and discuss some of the major energy issues as they relate to the sustainable development agenda, and to showcase successes that, if replicated, can help bring about a sustainable energy future.

UNEP Exhibitions

H2O - From Hilltops to Oceans Pavillion
Date : 28 August - 3 September
Venue : Water Dome

At the height of the WSSD, 28 August to 3 September, the 11,000 sqm MTN SunDome in Johannesburg will be transformed into the venue of a "WaterDome", in which stakeholders from public and private organisations in the water sector will get the opportunity to launch and exhibit their water-related activities, policies, initiatives, (new) technologies, products etc
