United Nations regional commissions and UNEP regional offices have been entrusted with the primary responsability for preparing a regional platform for WSSD. Each region is to prepare an assessment report on progress achieved with regard to sustainable development since the Rio Summit od 1992, including proposals for regional future priorities, and for the organisation of regional intergovernmental preparatory meetings.

Industry focused regional consultation

In addition, UNEP conducted a multi-stakeholder consultation process for identifying the main industrial development sustainability concerns at the regional level. This process resulted in five operational documents, each of wich served as input to the corresponding regional Preparatory Committee Meetings (the Ministerial fora mandated to outline the broader sustainable development agendas regionally).
