Description:

Bitlumens gives access to a blockchain platform that connects microcredit solutions to women in Guatemala living in rural villages who are not connected to the grid, offering SHS combined with IoT. In fact, the company uses the blockchain to give transparency on the transactions performed by each user. To be able to provide financial inclusion two important pieces of information are provided, digital IDs and KYC (Know your customer). We will provide cooperative banks with key pieces of information required to open an account or facilitate financial services given the proof of valid microcredit. Each user will be able to have their own ID and credit history. This information can be shared with third parties who offer microlending solutions, governments and development banks. Moreover, our system gives the option to use biometric tools to collect a fingerprint.
The project will target about 500 households annually in each county in Guatemala. Bitlumens expects to reach an overall target of 10,000 households by 2019 and 500.000 by 2025. By 2030, an estimated 1 million households are expected to access SHS technology.

Framework agreement to reduce the consumption of lightweight plastic carrier bags (Plastic Carrier Bag Agreement)

Description:

The Ministry of the Environment has concluded the first Green Deal agreement with the Federation of Finnish Commerce (Plastic Carrier Bag Agreement) to implement the EU Directive on packaging and packaging waste by a voluntary agreement instead of a legal instrument.

The agreement is in force until the end of 2025, and the aim is to make sure that Finland reaches the reduction targets for the consumption of plastic carrier bags in the EU Directive. The aim is that by the end of 2025 no more than 40 bags per person per year are used. The reduction target concerns all plastic carrier bags in retail outlets, excluding very lightweight bags provided for loose food such as fruit and vegetables and when required for hygiene purposes.

In the agreement the Finnish Commerce Federation gives a commitment extending to 2025 to encourage and advise companies in the trade sector to join the agreement on plastic carrier bags, support advisory and information campaigns, monitor the fulfillment of the objectives, and deliver the monitoring data to the Ministry of the Environment.

The Ministry of the Environment will assess the impact of the measures on reducing the consumption of plastic carrier bags and preventing litter after three years from concluding the agreement.

We are committed to decontamination prior to recycling to extract unwanted hazardous substances in the waste before it goes back in the recycling loop.

Description:

We are deeply convinced that only a model built on non-toxic materials cycles can and will ensure a safe and sustainable circular economy. To reach this ultimate goal, we are committed to strive that substances or materials streams contaminated with toxic substances are appropriately decontaminated before being reincorporated into the recycling chain.

Our objective is that legal provisions on circular economy that flourish in member states acknowledge this significant necessity: prior to recycling, unwanted hazardous components or pollutants contained in both non-hazardous and hazardous waste should be extracted and treated in compliance with the waste and chemical laws to ensure that toxic substances would not be again and again reincorporated in materials that aim to become products of day to day life. Only by controlling that we will protect health and the environment and pave the way towards the achievement of sustainable consumption and production patterns (Goal 12). By promoting high quality recycling we will work to sustainably guarantee "the environmentally sound management of chemicals and all wastes throughout their life cycle" and achieve healthy lives and promote well-being (Goal 3).

The technical solutions already exist and are effective. We miss the political signal that would set decontamination in the legislation. We should hit hard, we must hit now and we could not dream more symbolic than having the solution of decontamination as part of a pollution free planet, endorsed by the United Nations.

The Basel Convention OEWG should provide a specific guideline on decontamination ensuring consistency with Chemicals and Waste Subprogramme.

Representing the global chemical industry, the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) commits to combatting pollution by expanding its Responsible Care program to continuously reduce emissions and increase global capacity to manage chemicals safely.

Description:

Part of our everyday lives, chemistry is essential for sustainable development. To realize the benefits of chemistry, we must handle chemicals safely.

ICCA promotes Responsible Care (RC) to continuously improve the implementation of sound chemicals management globally, with a particular focus on reducing emissions. The RC Pollution Prevention Code focuses on reducing contaminants and pollutants released to air, water, and land, as well as the amount of waste generated at facilities.

Since 2006, ICCA has delivered more than 220 workshops for domestic and international industry, regulators, and local authorities. With support of ICCA, 62 associations have implemented RC in 67 countries; these associations support local member companies in safely handling chemicals, improving operations, and reducing emissions.

Additionally, the chemical industry has generated a significant set of toxicological data on chemicals in commerce to increase knowledge and facilitate risk assessments, thereby promoting the safe handling of chemicals.

ICCA commits to work with members to:
- Continuously improve environmental, health, safety, and security performance
- Report on industry emissions (including through SAICM)
- Expand RC to five countries lacking chemicals management infrastructure by establishing local associations by 2030
- Deepen RC implementation in China and India, as Asia accounts for more than 60 percent of global chemicals production

Beach Clean-up in Djerba, Tunisia: From Local to Global

Description:

The beautiful beaches of the Island Djerba in Tunisia are littered with plastic waste, except in those beach areas where hotels clean "their part" of the beach. The commitment of Jonathan GmbH has the objective to engage with the local community, hotels, tourists, and interested international volunteers (including from UN Environment) to organize Djerba beach clean-ups in 2018-2019, including an awareness raising campaign to support sustainable change. By engaging local, national and international stakeholders, including local and national tourist authorities, artists, and the media, the initiative seeks to create a change of mindsets on the island, in the country, and giving impulses to other countries. The long-term aim is a careful appreciation of beaches as a valuable environmental, local and tourism resource.
Local hotels will be asked to partner to provide rooms for volunteers, local musicians will share their music during evening beach celebrations, and the local and national media will be present to report on the action and results achieved. This initiative will also pilot how international, national and local actors can work together to create a movement to help rid the world's beaches from plastic and to initiate sustainable change in a participatory way .
Jonathan GmbH will organize Sahara retreats in Tunisia in 2018. We are committed to stay a week before and after in Tunisia/Djerba to help coordinate and participate in the clean-ups. Planning meetings are scheduled for April 2018 (coupled with a demonstration clean-up), with a full campaign taking place in October 2018/2019.

Además reduce los pesticidas ya que evita la expansión de hongos y patógenos a través de sus picos, plumas y patas.En la acuicultura, su efectividad es cercana al 100% en algunas plagas de aves, además de reducir la ingesta, reduce la utilización de antibióticos en los peces ya que las aves les transmiten más de 15 tipos de enfermedades. En regiones de Africa y Sudamérica, las plagas de aves les impiden a los agricultores exportar a los mercados locales y los mantienen en la pobreza. o WS2: provides market based solutions to raise private-sector ambition. FOLU will host a breakfast with leading CEOs at Davos.
o WS3: takes action to countries; building roadmaps, informed by long-term pathways. For example, we are driving action in Colombia, Indonesia and Ethiopia by engaging deeply and brought decision-makers from private and public sectors together

In partnership with Ocean Conservancy, Trash Free Seas Alliance®, 3M, PepsiCo, Procter & Gamble, The Coca-Cola Company, the World Plastics Council, and the American Chemistry Council, Closed Loop Partners (CLP) is launching Closed Loop Oceans, an initiative to raise $150M to finance solutions to ocean plastic.

Description:

Closed Loop Oceans is designed to fund waste management and recycling solutions in Southeast Asia, with a focus on investments to improve collection, sorting and recycling markets that prevent plastics from entering the environment. Nearly half of the plastic that flows into the ocean every year–an estimated eight million metric tons–escapes from waste streams in just five rapidly developing economies in Asia.

The market-based investment strategy and supporting mechanism is modelled after CLP's proven U.S. investment strategies for waste management and recycling. This mechanism aims to catalyse investments from larger, less nimble actors such as development finance institutions by demonstrating solutions and building a pipeline of projects. It expects to deploy a combination of grants and concessionary capital to build recycling and waste management infrastructure as a tool to demonstrate investment viability and maximize recycling profitability. 

Effective waste management reduces plastics waste leakage, leads to healthier citizens, creates jobs, and reduces emissions. It is also a critical component to making a circular economy function, ensuring that materials can be recovered for reuse and recycling. This initiative aims to solve the root causes of plastics in the ocean by investing in the systems and emerging technologies needed to capture and transform waste into valuable commodities before it reaches marine environments, while also providing tangible benefits to communities. 

The initiative aims to share the results of its initial phase of work within the next year to help build the field of investors looking to deploy capital into this market.

WRAPTIE Pledges to Utilise Recycled Materials (Including Plastics) Whenever Possible

Description:

Working closely with manufacturing companies in Taiwan, WRAPTIE has begun researching and developing products that will utilise R-PET materials. The goal is to use 100% R-PET whenever possible. 

One of the Directors, Mark Blackburn, along with his foundation, One Brown Planet, will continue to educate about plastic pollution and get involved with beach cleaning and other plastic pollution control activities.
