The Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife (SPAW) Sub-Programme of the United Nations Environment Programme Cartagena Convention Secretariat  is pleased to invite you to participate in its webinar entitled “Sargassum Watch (NOAA) and Data collection tools”. This exciting learning event is  part of a series of webinars on citizen science projects in the  Wider Caribbean Region.

The webinar will present the different tools used to record sargassum sightings, as well as the products and services offered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s  CoastWatch Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico Regional Node and Atlantic OceanWatchwhich  are directly related to the monitoring and follow-up of sargassum bursts. Some techniques and processes that allow for easy access to global and regional satellite data products commonly used for sargassum monitoring and forecasting will be described. Participants will also receive insights on how to use these tools to better understand, manage and protect the region’s ocean and coastal resources.

The UNEP Cartagena Convention Secretariat’s Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife (SPAW) Sub-Programmeis currently supporting the implementation of activities under the ACP MEA Phase 3 Project, a joint partnership between the European Union, the Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States, UN Environment Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

The SPAW Sub-Programme is responsible for Component 2.2 of the project which aims to build  functional network(s) of SPAW-listed Protected Areas covering interconnected marine habitats and ecosystems for restoring and sustaining ocean health.

These networks seek to strengthen collaboration and learning between protected areas managers in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico to address ecosystem protection and conservation challenges commonly faced throughout the SPAW network of sites.
