We’ve just kicked off the webinar series Accelerating the Circular Economy of Plastics in Cities!
This initiative, developed within the framework of the Intercity Network on Plastics Circular Economy in Latin America and the Caribbean, seeks to strengthen knowledge exchange to accelerate the transition toward a circular economy of plastics in the region’s cities.
The Intercity Network is part of the Circular Cities Beyond Plastic GEF project.
Its objective is to promote circular actions in six cities across the Caribbean and the Pacific, connecting governments, the private sector, and organizations to tackle plastic pollution and marine plastics in cities.
First webinar: Tourism and the Circular Economy of Plastics
Tourism, a strategic sector for cities in the region, was the focus of this first conversation. Experiences were shared and strategies proposed to reduce plastic pollution, protect ecosystems, and strengthen local economies.
Featured panelists:
- Janet Vivas (INVEMAR) - GREENTUR Project: Reusable cup system to reduce single-use plastics (#SUPs).
- Emma Samson (Searious Business) - Zero Plastic Waste Toolkits: Practical toolkits to achieve zero plastic waste in tourism.
- Svitlana Mikhalyeva (UNEP) - Global Tourism Plastics Initiative (GTPI): Global experiences to accelerate the circular economy of plastics in cities.
Key takeaways:
- The circular economy of plastics delivers environmental, social, and economic benefits.
- Circular models strengthen local employment, value chains, and reduce carbon footprints.
- Clear regulatory frameworks and public-private collaboration are essential to scale regional solutions.
This first webinar marks the beginning of a series that will support member cities of the Intercity Network on their path towards more circular, resilient, and innovative models to address plastic pollution in Latin America and the Caribbean.
