Appointment of new Coordinator

Chris Corbin The UNEP Cartagena Convention Secretariat and Caribbean Environment Programme is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Christopher Corbin as Coordinator, effective 1st September 2022.

He joined UNEP in September 2004 and has served since then as the Programme Manager for the Assessment and Management of Environmental Pollution (AMEP) Sub-Programme. Since 2015, he has also managed the Secretariat’s Communication, Education, Training and Awareness (CETA) Sub-Programme.

As Programme Manager, he was responsible for the development, resource mobilization, and implementation of multi-country projects on wastewater management, solid waste management, and integrated coastal zone and watershed management, all with the objective of improving governance of the Caribbean Sea through support to countries of the Wider Caribbean Region.  Mr. Corbin facilitated the development of, and co-authored, the region’s first Marine Litter Action Plan, Regional Marine Litter Strategy, Regional Nutrients Pollution Reduction Strategy, and the first State of Convention Area Report on marine pollution. Under his stewardship, the Land-Based Sources of Marine Pollution Protocol of the Cartagena Convention entered into force and the number of Contracting Parties increased from 2 to 15.

Mr. Corbin, a Saint Lucian national born in Barbados, has over 30 years of national and regional experience in programme and project management. Prior to his position with UNEP, he was Senior Sustainable Development and Environment Officer with the Government of Saint Lucia where he participated in several environmental negotiations at the regional and international levels.

He has a Bachelor’s degree with honours in Chemistry and Biology, and postgraduate training in environmental toxicology, environmental negotiations and diplomacy, and project and programme management certification.

Mr. Corbin was awarded the 2008 winner of the UNEP Baobab Staff Awards in the Professional Service Award Category and has authored or co-authored several peer reviewed publications on oceans governance, pollution, environmental health, and monitoring and analysis. Most recently, he co-chaired UNEP’s Anti-Racism Task Force.
