A Mid-Atlantic effort to reduce marine debris

The problem of marine litter and debris knows no bounds- even in the Mid-Atlantic.

One approach for the Mid-Atlantic region is the creation of a Marine Debris Reduction Plan to explore regional solutions to decrease marine litter and debris. The Plan will be drafted at the Mid-Atlantic Marine Debris Summit from June 17-19, 2019 with input from our Programme Officer for the Pollution Sub-Programme, Mr.  Christopher Corbin along with researchers, educators, policymakers and representatives from the business sector.

The Plan will allow partners to share experiences, knowledge and expertise, effective techniques and best practices to strengthen their capacity to collaboratively reduce marine litter and debris in the Mid-Atlantic.

Participants in the Summit will benefit from updates on the latest trends in marine debris science and explore tools in enhancing knowledge, changing behaviour and influencing policies that reduce marine debris.

The Summit, being held at the George Mason University, is funded by the Virginia Coastal Zone Management Program (led by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality) through federal Coastal Zone Management Act grants from the NOAA Office for Coastal Management, and funding from the NOAA Marine Debris Program.
