Background

Under the umbrella of ENVIROTECH 2026: Indonesia International Environment Technology and Innovation Expo & Conference, held in conjunction with World Environment Day (WED) and World Ocean Day 2026 (WOD), COBSEA will contribute to two events at the Jakarta Convention Center as part of Indonesia’s WED and WOD 2026 celebrations.

Organized by the Directorate of Coastal and Marine Pollution and Damage Control, Ministry of Environment of Indonesia, in collaboration with Universitas Negeri Jakarta, this seminar will bring together government institutions, academia, international organizations, civil society, and maritime stakeholders to strengthen multi-stakeholder collaboration on marine litter management.

COBSEA will join as a speaker to share regional perspectives on marine litter management in the East Asian Seas, including regional cooperation through the Regional Action Plan on Marine Litter (RAP MALI).

 

Local Voices, Real Actions: Tackling Marine Plastic Pollution Together

Co-organized by the Ministry of Environment of Indonesia and COBSEA, this side event will bring together government, regional organizations, civil society, academia, the private sector, youth, and local stakeholders to exchange practical solutions for tackling marine litter and plastic pollution. It will showcase partnerships with the Secretariat of the Basel Convention, WWF Indonesia, the Regional Capacity Centre for Clean Seas (RC3S), and other partners to support scalable action in the East Asian Seas region, in line with COBSEA’s Regional Action Plan on Marine Litter (RAP MALI).

Objectives
  • Strengthen dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders on marine litter management.
  • Share policy perspectives, scientific knowledge, and practical implementation experiences.
  • Highlight scalable solutions for preventing marine plastic pollution.
  • Support stronger partnerships in Indonesia and the wider East Asian Seas region.
Expected Outputs
  • Increased awareness of practical approaches to marine litter prevention and management.
  • Strengthened collaboration among government, academia, NGOs, communities, the private sector, and regional organizations.
  • Exchange of experiences from ongoing initiatives and local actions.
