The third session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-3) took place from 4-6 December 2017 in Nairobi Kenya.

UNEA-3 considered the overarching theme of pollution. Outcomes of the session included:

  • a political declaration on pollution, linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • resolutions and decisions adopted by Member States to address specific dimensions of pollution
  • voluntary commitments by governments, private sector entities and civil society organizations to clean up the planet
  • the Clean Planet Pledge, a collection of individual commitments to take personal action to end pollution in all its forms.

The UN Environment Assembly Bureau

The Assembly is led by a Bureau and its President. The UN Environment Assembly Bureau assists the President in the general conduct of business of the UN Environment Assembly. The Bureau and its President are elected by the Assembly for a period of two years starting at the closure of the session at which they were elected and until the closure of the next regular session. The Bureau is composed of ten Ministers of the Environment and other senior officials from member states representing each of the five UN regions.
