Upgrading the existing scheme for waste management in the Republic of North Macedonia

Project Summary

The project aims to strengthen the institutions involved in chemicals and waste management and building their capacities with the view to supporting enhanced coordination, synergy and cooperation at the national level to implement the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, the Minamata Convention and the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management. This will provide for greater sustainability and inclusiveness given that the project also aims to establish a new division that focuses on the implementation of chemical and waste related multilateral environmental agreements in the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning.

Project Objectives

The project will undertake the following measures to strengthen the legal and institutional frameworks for Sound Management of Chemicals:

  • Definition of the national coordination mechanism;
  • Review of the national institutional and legal structure for chemicals and waste management;
  • Training Component for the institutional representatives;
  • Mainstreaming of priorities for strengthening institutions for chemicals and waste management and quadruple synergy scheme in the national chemical and waste planning;
  • Define Terms of Reference of the new division responsible for the joint implementation of the Basel, Rotterdam, Stockholm, Minamata Convention and SAICM.
