What we do

In Transport

The Share the Road Programme supports governments and other stakeholders in developing countries around the world to move away from prioritizing the car-driving minority, towards investing in infrastructure for the majority; those who walk and cycle.

As well as undertaking global advocacy and developing NMT related tools we provide in country support. Explore the country profiles to find out what’s happening on the ground.

Our stakeholders include:

In-Country Partners

The approach to involve local partners active in the area of non-motorized transportation on a small-scale basis is a very efficient and effective way to bring in local support and expertise. At national level the programme we work with:

  • NGO’s
  • Civil Society
  • National / Federal Government
  • City Government
  • Private Sector
  • Educational Institutions

Development Institutions

Harnessing partnerships with infrastructure projects is a positive way of enabling the needs of pedestrians and cyclists to be considered within projects.  We have worked with Trademark East Africa, World Bank, JICA and other development partners.

Global Partners

Harnessing partnerships with international organizations and networks to raise the profile and boost the impact of Share the Road is also important to us.  We have worked with Walk21, ITDP, ICLEI and WRI Brazil.

Global & Regional Initiatives

Share the Road also operates within the context of the global agenda on sustainable transport (and in particular road safety, environment and accessibility), for example we work within the following initiatives:

  • The Sustainable Development Goals
  • The Africa Sustainable Transport Forum
  • The Action Plan for the Global Decade for Road Safety
  • The High Level Advisory Group on Sustainable Transport
