Launch of the waste management improvement strategies and action plans for Mongolia and Ulaanbaatar and inauguration of the first eco-friendly sanitary facility pilot project

As part of the ''Waste and Climate Change'' project, on July 20 IETC will launch the Waste Management Improvement Strategies and Action Plans for Mongolia and its capital city Ulaanbaatar. The strategies are the result of a close collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) of Mongolia and the Asian Institute of Technology, Regional Resource Centre for Asia and the Pacific (AIT RRC.AP), with the financial contribution of UN Environment IETC and the Government of Japan. The objectives of the action plans are to ensure sound management of solid wastes, promote conservation and efficient use of resources, strive for environmentally sound technologies and approaches, and mitigate adverse impacts to the climate by reducing greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions and short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) generated by the waste sector.

On this occasion IETC, and the Government of Mongolia will take the opportunity to officially launch the ''Waste and Climate Change'' project in Mongolia.The project is funded by Germany International Climate Initiative (IKI) and implemented by IETC in Mongolia, Bhutan and Nepal. In Mongolia the national implementing partner is the Asia Foundation Country Office.

On July 21, with the Minister of Environment and Tourism,  IETC will also inaugurate the decommissioning of a pilot project:  the first wastewater treatment plant and sanitation facility in a Mongolian protected area: the Gorkhi-Terelj National Park .
