Countries Establish New Global Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste, and Pollution

Punta del Este, Uruguay, 20 June 2025 – In a major step toward addressing pollution and safeguarding human and environmental health, countries have agreed to establish a new global science-policy panel focused on chemicals, waste, and pollution prevention.

The panel, created under the auspices of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), fills a crucial gap in the global environmental governance framework. It will offer independent scientific assessments, identify knowledge gaps, and provide policy-relevant advice, particularly to support countries—especially developing ones—in managing chemicals and waste more effectively.

With its creation, the panel joins the ranks of the IPCC and IPBES as a cornerstone of global scientific cooperation. It is designed to help governments anticipate impacts, translate complex science into actionable policy, and support informed decision-making.

UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen hailed the agreement as “historic,” marking a milestone in global environmental multilateralism and a crucial step toward tackling the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.
