The GWMO is the first of a series of Outlooks. The publication provides a general overview of the state of Waste Management globally and it is being complemented by regional and thematic Waste Management Outlooks for Asia, Central Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), Mountain Regions and Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The Regional Outlooks allow for deeper analyses and propose recommendations better tailored to each region. 

Mountain regions affect the whole world. Their vitality is essential for downstream food security, as freshwater from mountain regions feeds agriculture. They are also sources of drinking water, and sites of production for renewable energy such as hydropower, solar, wind, and biogas. Mountain litter is a problem because it reduces the intrinsic value of nature, degrades the environment and pollutes landscapes downstream.
