2018
- The NOWPAP Special Monitoring and Coastal Environmental Assessment Regional Activity Center’s (CEARAC) Assessment of major pressures on marine biodiversity in the NOWPAP Region found a worsening of major environmental pressures linked to the rapid economic growth in the region. A major factor is the rapid growth of aquaculture in the region with a strong impact on marine biodiversity.
- NOWPAP CEARAC published a report on the technical feasibility of assessing the regional distribution of ‘blue carbon’ sinks – seagrass beds.
2014-2015
- NOWPAP CEARAC conducted a pilot assessment on the impacts of major threats to marine biodiversity in the selected sea areas in the NOWPAP region, focused on three major threats/pressures on the marine and coastal environment, namely eutrophication, non-indigenous species and habitat alteration.
- An assessment by the NOWPAP Data and Information Regional Activity Centre (DINRAC) found more endangered species in the region than listed in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.
- The NOWPAP Pollution Monitoring Regional Activity Centre (POMRAC) published the second edition of “State of the Marine Environment Report for the NOWPAP region” (SOMER-2) assessing ecological problems related to biodiversity, habitat disturbance and climate change impacts.
2013
- NOWPAP CEARAC conducted an assessment of marine protected areas (MPAs) in the NOWPAP region and, in collaboration with the North-East Asian Subregional Programme for Environmental Cooperation, launched the North-east Asia MPAs network.
- NOWPAP DINRAC published “Atlas of Marine Invasive Species in the NOWPAP Region”.
2010
- NOWPAP DINRAC published “Summary on Marine and Coastal Protected Areas in the NOWPAP Region”, compiling information on 87 MPAs.
- “Threats to Marine and Coastal Biodiversity in the NOWPAP Region” published, listing overfishing, pollution, invasive species and climate change as threats to marine and coastal biodiversity in the region.
2007
- The NOWPAP Pollution Monitoring Regional Activity Centre (POMRAC) published the first “State of the Marine Environment Report for the NOWPAP region” (SOMER-1), including an assessment of the impact of non-indigenous species and habitat alteration on biodiversity in the region.
