Marking International Day, Secretary-General Says Montreal Protocol’s Success Protecting Ozone Layer Powerful Example of Multilateralism in Action

The following is UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ message on the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, observed on 16 September:

Today, we celebrate 35 years of the Montreal Protocol’s success in protecting the stratospheric ozone layer against synthetic chemicals that also cause climate heating. Thanks to a global agreement, humanity has averted a major health catastrophe due to ultraviolet radiation pouring through a massive hole in the ozone layer. The Montreal Protocol is a success because, when science discovered the threat we all faced, Governments and their partners acted. We adopted a global environmental agreement that has been universally ratified and decisively implemented. Read more...

GUYANA

Guyana_imageThe National Ozone Action Unit of the Hydrometeorological Service in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency undertook a series of public awareness activities in the Corentyne area during the period September 14-15, 2022 in observance of International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. The theme for this year’s observance was “Montreal Protocol @35: Global Cooperation Protecting Life on Earth.”

There was an appearance on the Guyana Today Show (GTV) on September 13, 2022, which allowed the Unit to inform the viewers about the importance of protecting the ozone layer and the significance of this year’s theme.

Students from four secondary schools (Berbice High, Berbice Educational Institute, Tutorial Academy, and New Amsterdam Multilateral School) were invited for a half-day session at the New Amsterdam Multilateral School on September 14.  Read more...

INDIA

India’s contribution to the Montreal Protocol in terms of policy formulation is noteworthy, India has played a proactive role in the phase-out of production and consumption of Ozone Depleting Substances. This was stated by the Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Labour and Employment Bhupendra Yadav at a programme organized to observe the 28th World Ozone Day in Mumbai today. The Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Ashwini Kumar Choubey were also present on the occasion. IRAN

Iran_image_2On the occasion of the 35th “World Ozone Day Anniversary of Montreal Protocol”, an online (webinar) ceremony, due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, was organized and held by the Iranian National Ozone Unit (NOU) on September 14, 2022.

In addition to the participation of the Deputy Head of DoE for Human Environmental Affairs-Dr. Heshmati; NOU director-Dr. Hajizadeh; and NOU officers at the ceremony, the representatives of the Implementing Agencies of UNDP-Dr. Mohammadi; UNIDO-Mrs. Sayyahi; GIZ-Mr. Saadatfar; Technical & Vocational Training Organization (TVTO)- Dr. Taheri; Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade-Dr. Nematpour; deputy head of DoE for Training and Public Partnership- Dr. Moradi; Refrigeration Association of the I.R. Iran- Mr. Jamali; and more than 30 provincial ozone network officers also attended the ceremony. Read more...

IRAQ

With the passage of 37 years since the Montreal Protocol, on World Ozone Day, we remember how the Montreal Protocol ended the greatest threat ever facing all humanity, which is the depletion of the ozone layer.

 The Iraqi National Ozone Center celebrated World Ozone Day by holding a celebration event in the theatre of the Ministry of Environment on Monday 19/9/2022. The celebration included the speech of the Minister of Environment Doctor Jassem Abdel Aziz, and then presented the speech of the Executive Director of the UNEP Ms. Inger Andersen and the Coordinator of the National Ozone Center, Engineer Shatha Kadhim presented a working paper about protocol Montreal and the sustainable development goals. JAMAICA

To commemorate World ozone Day, Jamaica's National Ozone Unit (NOU) organized a series of events during the week commencing 12 September 2022. These consisted of media interviews, postings on social media, internal staff sensitisation and the launch of an updated
webpage for the NOU.

An invitation was extended by UNIDO to the NOU to commemorate World Refrigeration Day on 22 June 2022; the NOU facilitated the participation of the RAC sector and NEPA and users of social media in a webinar, the topic of which was "Flammable refrigerants - future-proof, environmentally friendly and safe to use".

KYRGYZSTAN

This year the Ozone Center of Kyrgyzstan (NOU) organized events to celebrate World Ozone Day. Invited lecturers and specialists of NOU gave lectures on sustainable development, environmental protection, including climate and ozone layer protection, and told how this knowledge could be integrated into the lessons for schoolchildren. The official motto of the events was "Global cooperation protecting life on earth ". The main goal of all activities was to disseminate information on ozone layer protection, climate change and the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol among schoolteachers, schoolchildren, university teachers and students, so they can contribute to the preservation of the ozone layer and climate change mitigation by disseminating information on phasing out of ozone-depleting substances and replacing high-GWP F-gases with natural refrigerants. Mongolia_image_1The National Ozone Authority (NOA) of Mongolia successfully celebrated World Ozone Day 2022 on September 16 by organizing and participating in several activities such as Asia Pacific Regional ‘Ozone2Climate’ Art contest winners announced at the national and regional levels.  Awareness-raising activities, awareness material, a Press conference, articles published on websites, organisations and school partnerships and social networking channels were among the activities organised for the event.  Read more...

SAINT LUCIA

This report prepared by the National Ozone Unit in St Lucia provides an overview of the public education and outreach activities conducted as part of Saint Lucia’s commemoration of the 2022 International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. The activities contributed to meeting the awareness raising and information exchange objectives under the Institutional Strengthening Project for which supporting activities include the observance of Ozone Day.

The objectives of Ozone Day 2022 were to: Inform the general public about ozone depletion and climate change; Inform the general public about Saint Lucia’s HCFC Phase-out activities including the newly approved HPMP Stage II; Raise awareness among importers and retailers on the legal requirements for import and retail of refrigerants; Increase awareness of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol and its contribution to mitigating climate change; Provide information about the economic and environmental benefits of the HCFC phase out and HFC phase-down and promote the use of climate and ozone–friendly and alternative technologies in Saint Lucia. TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO

The Trinidad and Tobago National Ozone Unit recognized World Ozone Day 2022 with several activities over the week of September 16, 2022 aimed at raising the profile of ozone activities as well as engaging stakeholders to share some technical information relating to sustainable cooling. These included various media inserts in the local newspaper, a Refresher Technical Training for Trainers in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, a Public Awareness Display at a beach clean-up on sun safety and ozone layer protection, as well as a Webinar on Sustainable Financing for Energy Efficiency.  Read more...

TUNISIA

TURKEY


Turkey posterThe National Ozone Unit (NOU), Turkey gathered with around 100 children in 5th grade (10-11 years old) studying near districts in Ankara . The children were selected from vulnerable groups. A full-day event made up of four different workshops for children: vermi-composting workshop, drawing workshop, clay workshop and climate and music workshops. The event organized by the NOU in collaboration with UNIDO, aimed to raise awareness of ozone layer protection and climate change.
 
The NOU designed a special logo for the event and provided some visibility material (backpack, t-shirts, hat). They prepared an activity book including informative notes on ozone layer protection in Turkish and lighted Atakule, which is one of the city landmarks of Ankara. UGANDA

The New Vision" Newspaper in Uganda published the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) statement on the occasion of commemorating world Ozone Day, including an article 'NEMA has been building capacity for safe handling of refrigerants - Ozone layer: Uganda's efforts paying off.'
