The WeMed Award recognizes business achievements, but also the efforts of public authorities, academia, support organizations, financial institutions, civil society organizations and other stakeholders in creating an enabling environment for green entrepreneurship. The award will also recognize measures taken by candidates to ensure gender equality. The jury itself will reflect gender and pan-Mediterranean geographical balance.
At COP 21 the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention and its Protocols requested that UNEP/MAP, through the Regional Activity Centre for Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP/RAC), launch the first edition of a Mediterranean business award for environmental innovation, as a flagship initiative of the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD).
The WeMed Award is developed as part of the Switchers Support Programme. Its first edition is financed by the EU-funded SwitchMed programme. The award will bolster the endeavor aiming to initiate the transformational changes needed for a post-COVID green renaissance in the Mediterranean.
