The Mediterranean Commission on Sustainable Development (MCSD) will hold its 17th meeting on 4-6 July 2017, in Athens, Greece. In its capacity of advisory body to the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention, the MCSD will address and provide substantial contribution to the Contracting Parties to assist them in their efforts to integrate environmental issues, sustainability considerations, and global processes in their socioeconomic programmes, such as the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Adopted under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The meeting will discuss the further implementation at the regional level, of the Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG14): “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources", with particular consideration of issues such as pollution, Sustainable Consumption and Production, Integrated Coastal Zone Management, and Marine Spatial Planning.
The MCSD will also discuss the implementation of the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development 2016-2025 (MSSD), which was adopted by the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention in 2016. The MSSD 2016-2025 is a strategic guiding document for all stakeholders and partners to translate the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the regional, sub-regional and national levels. The good practices and challenges encountered so far will be highlighted together with specific aspects of its implementation, such as the Simplified Peer Review Mechanism (SIMPEER) of National Strategies for Sustainable Development; monitoring indicators; and national and regional actions.
The MCSD is a forum for debate, mobilising work on priority themes for the Mediterranean with a unique composition, engaging the participation of representatives from countries and stakeholders, on an equal footing. The Commission is composed of 40 members representing each of the 22 Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention and its Protocols, as well as three representatives from each of the following groups of stakeholders: local authorities; NGOs; socio-economic actors; scientific community; intergovernmental organizations; regional parliamentary associations.
