The Third UN Ocean Conference (UNOC-3) has provided, on 10 June 2025, a momentous occasion for the Mediterranean region, as ministers, high-level representatives and the Executive Director of UNEP gathered to commemorate 50 years of the UNEP Mediterranean Action Plan and 30 years of the post-Rio Barcelona Convention, during the Mediterranean high-level event organized jointly by Slovenia, France, Egypt and Spain with support from UNEP/MAP.
UNEP Executive Director Ms. Inger Andersen and Slovenia’s Minister of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning, H.E. Jože Novak, led the opening remarks, emphasizing the significance of this milestone for Mediterranean environmental cooperation.
The event featured two insightful panel discussions:
- "50 Years of UNEP/MAP: Success Stories and Added Value" moderated by H.E. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment of Egypt
- "Challenges and New Commitments, with a Particular Focus on Combating Plastic Pollution” led by H.E. Agnès Pannier-Runacher, Minister of Ecological Transition, Biodiversity, Forests, Seas, and Fisheries of France
The high level event concluded with a Ministerial Declaration, reaffirming and renewing the ambitious commitment for a healthy Mediterranean Sea and Coast.
