The H2020 Review and Monitoring Group met in Athens, Greece, on 23-24 September 2019 in the context of the Shared Environmental Information Systems (SEIS) II South project, funded by the EU’s European Neighborhood Instrument (ENI).
The Horizon 2020 (H2020) Initiative was endorsed by the Euro-Mediterranean Ministerial Conference on the Environment in 2005 with the aim of de-polluting the Mediterranean by 2020. H2020 supports the implementation of the pollution reduction commitments undertaken in the framework of the UNEP/MAP—Barcelona Convention system, including the Protocols addressing various forms of pollution in the Mediterranean Sea and Coastal Region.
The H2020 Review and Monitoring Group meeting in Athens notably reviewed progress in the production of the H2020/National Action Plan (NAP) indicators and in the preparation of the second H2020 indicator-based assessment. The first assessment was conducted in 2014 and its findings are captured in a report co-authored by UNEP/MAP and the European Environmental Agency (EEA).
National and regional thematic experts on water, waste and industrial emissions, who are contributing to the ENI SEIS II South project, notably attended the meeting alongside the national Focal Points of MED POL and SEIS in Mediterranean countries.
