A bilateral meeting between the Secretariats of the UN Environment/Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP) and the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions, was held in Barcelona, Spain, on the 8th November 2017. The purpose of the meeting was to identify priority areas and opportunities for future collaboration between the Barcelona Convention and the Basel and Stockholm Conventions Regional Centers particularly in relation to marine litter, plastics and microplastics, and the environmentally sound management of plastic wastes.

Mr. Gaetano Leone, UN Environment/MAP Coordinator presented the Mediterranean case and response to marine litter challenges in the region, aiming to transfer knowledge, experiences, best practices and lessons learnt to the Regional Centres, being active in other regions of the world.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to review the Memorandum of Understanding, signed in 2005 between the Secretariats of the Barcelona Conventions and the Basel Convention, and to hold substantive discussions on potential new or updated areas of cooperation and on related activities.
