The UNEP/MAP–Barcelona Convention Secretariat Coordinator Gaetano Leone took part in the Marine Regions Forum on 30 September-2 October 2019 in Berlin, Germany. The Coordinator also participated in the 21st Global Meeting of the Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans organized by UNEP on 3-5 October 2019 that also took place in the German capital.

The Coordinating Unit acts as Secretariat for the MAP—Barcelona Convention system.

The Contracting Parties adopt the budget prepared by the Coordinating Unit. This budget is financed by assessed contributions from the Contracting Parties, voluntary contributions from Contracting Parties, supporting organizations and selected non-governmental sources, as well as counterpart contributions.

MAP was instrumental in devising the following regional regulatory measures that constitute an important element of the MAP—Barcelona Convention regulatory framework and underpin the implementation of the Barcelona Convention and its Protocols:

The work of the MAP—Barcelona Convention system is guided by a six-year Medium-Term Strategy (MTS) and implemented through two-year Programmes of Work and budgets adopted by the meetings of the Contracting Parties.

The Mediterranean Action Plan of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP/MAP) is a regional cooperation platform established in 1975 as the first regional action plan under the UNEP Regional Seas Programme.

The Convention for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea Against Pollution (Barcelona Convention) was adopted on 16 February 1976 in Barcelona and entered into force in 1978.

The MAP-Barcelona Convention system rests upon a solid foundation of partnership and cooperation with regional and global institutions and actors sharing our vision. Over the years, MAP has sought to foster existing partnerships and to enter in new ones in line with the priorities set by the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention and its Protocols.
