The future we want for the Mediterranean Sea and coast— delivering on the SDGs while addressing the triple crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution

Event ID: OBZB158 (virtual side-event)

This side-event was designed to present a Mediterranean perspective on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as a regional contribution to the global deliberations that the 2022 UN Ocean Conference will host.

This virtual side-event was organized by UNEP/MAP and its Regional Activity Centres:

●    The Regional Activity Centre for Information and Communication (INFO/RAC)
●    The Regional Activity Centre for Sustainable Consumption and Production (MedWaves)
●    The Priority Actions Programme Regional Activity Centre (PAP/RAC)
●    Plan Bleu Regional Activity Centre (Plan Bleu)

●    The Specially Protected Areas Regional Activity Centre (SPA/RAC)

Date: 29 June 2022
Time: 11:30-12:45 (Lisbon time)
Venue: online.

The side-event aimed to:

  • explore pathways to accelerate the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by highlighting the strategies, instruments and tools that UNEP/MAP has developed with the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention in the pursuit of sustainable development in the Mediterranean region.
  • demonstrate the extent to which the 2030 Agenda and the 17 SDGs, as a universally accepted blueprint for sustainability and resilience, have been integrated into the work of the UNEP/MAP-Barcelona Convention system (notably through the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development - MSSD).
  • offer insights into the levers of transformative change that decision-makers can use to address the triple environmental crisis while scoring points in the achievement of the SDGs.
  • highlight major initiatives, such as PAMEx, programmes and regional developments aimed at transitioning to sustainability across economic sectors and bolstering resilience to potentially disruptive shocks.
