It is with great pleasure that we invite you to join a webinar on “Strengthening the Global Response to the Massive Influx of Sargassum Seaweed Blooms”, in follow-up to the resolution adopted at the seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7). The webinar will take place on 2 April 2026 from 4:00 to 5:30 EAT.
The webinar aims to provide Member States with an opportunity to engage in an in-depth discussion of the resolution, its objectives, and pathways for effective implementation at the national, regional, and global levels. The session will commence with a presentation by the proponent of the resolution, the Dominican Republic, which will provide an overview of the resolution and its key objectives. This will be followed by a scientific presentation examining the drivers and dynamics of Sargassum blooms, including emerging trends related to the increasing occurrence of algae blooms globally. Participants will also benefit from a country case study from Ghana, highlighting the impacts of Sargassum influxes and current management approaches. In addition, the Secretariat of the Cartagena Convention will present on regional responses in the Wider Caribbean, including ongoing collaborative efforts and lessons learned. The webinar will further provide a platform for open discussion on the development of an implementation plan for the resolution, including opportunities for Member States to engage, share experiences, and identify priority areas for cooperation.
