Circular Cities Beyond Plastics Project Steering Committee Advances Regional Collaboration in Panama
Representatives from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Cartagena Convention Secretariat, implementing partners such as INVEMAR, ANCON, Ministry of Water, Environment, Climate Change (MWECC) and National and local government partners, gathered in Panama City for the third in-person Project Steering Committee (PSC) meeting of the Circular Cities Beyond Plastics Project.
Cities across Latin America and the Caribbean continue to strengthen collaboration and knowledge-sharing through the webinar series “Accelerating the Circular Economy of Plastics in Cities,” led by the Intercity Network on Plastics Circular Economy.
Building on ongoing efforts to address plastic pollution, the Circular Cities Beyond Plastic project convened its second regional webinar under the Intercity Network on Plastics Circular Economy in Latin America and the Caribbean. The session brought together city representatives, technical experts and partners to exchange knowledge and identify scalable solutions for circular plastic management.

As part of the Circular Cities Project: Beyond Plastic, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) as the implementing agency and the UNEP Cartagena Convention Secretariat (UNEP-CEP) as the executing agency, the first consultancy is being launched to identify unnecessary plastics across economic sectors and provide alternatives for their elimination or substitution.
On July 19th 1979, the waters off Tobago's coast became the setting for a now-historic disaster. The supertankers Atlantic Empress and Aegean Captain collided, releasing nearly 287,000 tonnes of crude oil into the Caribbean Sea. At the time, this was the largest tanker-based oil spill in history, and its devastation echoed across the Caribbean.

However, a lack of technical knowledge; a lack of awareness of the health and environmental hazard of lead and where to source lead-free alternatives, as well as a shortage of lead paint laws in the countries where they are based mean many small manufacturers around the world are still producing hazardous lead paint.
