Panama Leads the Way: Local Action for a Pollution-Free Planet During Environment Week

During Environment Week, experiences like those in Panama remind us that solutions to #PlasticPollution start locally—with partnerships and concrete actions. Faced with a challenge that impacts ecosystems, health, and economies, cities play a key role in transforming production and consumption systems. From product redesign to stronger recycling and education, a circular and inclusive approach paves the way toward cleaner, more resilient development.
What’s happening? With support from the UN Environment Programme—through the Cartagena Convention Secretariat, the Caribbean Environment Programme, and the GEF LAC Cities project, the municipalities of Panama City and Colón joined a regional initiative promoting circular solutions to plastic pollution.

Led in Panama by ANCON, the Ministry of Environment, and local governments, the project promotes a cultural shift that goes beyond recycling, strengthening community and multisector action. This effort is aligned with Panama’s National Roadmap for Action on Plastic Pollution, which integrates regulation, innovation, education, and public participation.

Highlights from Environment Week in Panama included:

  • First Regional Meeting of NPAPs in Latin America and the Caribbean (June 2–4): The first regional gathering to strengthen strategies, partnerships, and sustainability of National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP) secretariats.
  •  Plastic Stop with Panama City (June 5): A day of environmental education, clean-up, and materials recovery in Curundú.
  • Mobile Recycling Station with Colón Municipality (June 7):

A community event focused on collection and recycling awareness. Panama shows us that a #PollutionFreePlanet is possible when we act together.
