Beat Plastic Pollution JA Competition

The ‘Beat Plastic Pollution JA’ competition was kicked off by the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Caribbean Environment Programme (CEP) and partners on World Environment Day, June 5.

It is a joint United Nations initiative aimed at highlighting the urgent need for action to reduce plastic pollution, which is a major challenge in the Caribbean and globally.

The competition, will run until June 23, sees Jamaican students demonstrating “the urgent need to work across the plastic life cycle and articulate different strategies to reduce and reuse plastic”

First International Day of Zero Waste bolsters actions to address global pollution crisis

Nairobi, 30 March 2023 – In response to the worsening impacts of waste on human health, the economy and the environment, the world today marked the inaugural International Day of Zero Waste, which encourages everyone to prevent and minimize waste and promotes a societal shift towards a circular economy.

6th Meeting of STAC reiterates importance of implementing Protocol Concerning Pollution from Land-Based Sources and Activities

Contracting Parties and Observers at the Sixth Meeting of the Scientific, Technical and Advisory Committee (STAC) to the Protocol Concerning Pollution from Land-Based Sources (LBS) and Activities in the Wider Caribbean, have reiterated the urgent need to protect our very valuable but fragile and vulnerable coastal and marine ecosystems from the negative impacts of marine pollution. The Virtual Meeting, held from February 1-3,  was hosted by the UNEP Cartagena Convention Secretariat as part of its mandate under the Convention to support governments in protecting the Caribbean Sea.

The LBS Protocol: Difficulties and Challenges in the Countries Participating in the Project GEF CReW

The Regional Activity Centre for Land-based Sources of Marine Pollution (LBS/RAC-Cimab) Protocol was contracted by the Caribbean Regional Coordinating Unit of the United Nations Environment Program (CAR-RCU/UNEP) to carry out the study that gives title to this report in the four Spanish-speaking countries involved in the Project GEF CReW: Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras and Panama.
