This High-Level Dialogue elaborated on how MEAs can drive forward the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and the necessary enabling conditions to accelerate progress and close implementation gaps in addressing the environmental dimension of sustainable development and the environmental challenges related to climate change, biodiversity loss and land degradation and pollution.

Moderator: Dr. Izabella Teixeira

Co-Chair, International Resource Panel (IRP)

Dr. Izabella Teixeira served as Minister of the Environment of Brazil from 2010 to 2016 and is currently Co-Chair of the International Resource Panel of the UN Environment Programme (IRP/UNEP). She is also a member of the High-Level Advisory Board of UN-DESA and of the Administrative Council of The Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES). In addition, she serves on the boards of international and national institutions, including as Senior Fellow of the Arapyaú Institute, Board Member of the Fundação FHC, and Member of the International Advisory Board at Brazilian Center of International Relations (CEBRI).

Throughout her career, Dr. Teixeira has held several administrative positions within the Ministry of Environment, the Rio de Janeiro State Government and in IBAMA (Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources). She played a key role in the negotiation of the Paris Agreement and was appointed in 2012 to the High-Level Panel of Eminent Persons for the Post-2015 Development Agenda.

In 2013, Dr. Teixeira won UNEP’s "Champions of the Earth" award  for her contribution to reducing deforestation in the Amazon. She holds a Master's degree in Energy Planning and a PhD in Environmental Planning from COPPE/UFRJ.

 

Prof. Jim Skea (Keynote speaker)

Chair, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

Prof. Jim Skea was elected Chair of the IPCC for the Seventh Assessment cycle in July 2023, having previously served as Co-Chair of Working Group III for the Sixth Assessment Cycle. From 2009 to 2023, he was Professor of Sustainable Energy at Imperial College London, with research focused on energy, climate change and technological innovation. He also served as Research Director of the UK Energy Research Centre (2004-2012) and Director of the Policy Studies Institute (1998-2004).

Prof. Skea has operated at the interface between research, policymaking and business throughout his career. He was a member of the UK Committee on Climate Change from its inception in 2008 until 2018 and was the Chair of Scotland’s Just Transition Commission from 2018 to 2023. From 2015 to 2017, he was President of the UK Energy Institute. He was awarded a CBE for services to sustainable energy in 2013 and an OBE for services to sustainable transport in 2004. In 2024, Prof. Skea was awarded a knighthood in the King’s Birthday Honours list for services to global leadership in climate science.
