What: While discussions are on to agree on an ambitious global biodiversity framework during CBD COP 15, implementation plans to achieve the framework and associated targets need to begin.

The Organisation of Africa, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS), in collaboration with the European Commission, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and a number of international, regional, and national partners, is supporting its 79 Member states to effectively implement a number of Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), including the CBD.

Using South-South Cooperation as the overarching framework for providing support to the Member States and Regions of the OACPS to implement the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, the intra-ACP MEA3 Programme is gearing up to augment support that will be needed on issues of capacity development, technology transfer, and knowledge management, as well as using both thematic and cross-cutting issues under the CBD.

Event objectives:

  1. Articulate the emerging opportunities for implementing the new global biodiversity framework using south-south cooperation;
  2. Identify uncommon approaches and partnerships to deliver the implementation mandate of CBD COP 15; and
  3. Support consolidation of ongoing actions to build the capacity of  Member States in implementing the global biodiversity framework and associated targets.

Expected outcomes:

  1. Identify plans for specific initiatives in support of Member States OACPS, including those related to SIDS;
  2. Engage with partners, including development banks, to focus on regional and national actions related to biodiversity financing; and
  3. Create synergies with existing support mechanisms and scale up good practices to kick-start the implementation of the GBF.
