Description:

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) funded the “Multi Country Project to Strengthen Institutional Capacities on LMO Testing in Support of National Decision Making” (MCP-ICLT) which runs from July 2017 to June 2023. The project is implemented by UNEP and co-executed by RAEIN-Africa. The implementing governments are Angola, Congo Democratic Republic, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi and Mozambique.

The event will have both UNEP and the African scientists talk about their experiences, challenges and outputs in the implementation of the project. In addition, the project Technical Team will share their experience with building capacity on detection of Living Modified Organisms (LMO) of the multi-country laboratories, whose baseline statuses differed both in terms of legal and policy support on biosafety and human and infrastructural capacities.

Notwithstanding the fact that at national levels, some of the participating countries do not have legal frameworks governing biosafety, the participating National Executing Agencies would share how the project contributes to the development of science-based decisions on biosafety and thus, strengthens the participating countries’ capacity to implement the provisions of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (CPB).
