What: The Global Leaders Group (GLG) co-chairs, Their Excellencies Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Mia Amor Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados will host a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) side event to discuss and address antimicrobial resistance (AMR) with Heads of Government and State, government Ministers and relevant stakeholders.

The UNGA 2024 High-level Meeting on AMR will be an opportunity to commit to clear and new targets and practical steps to address AMR.

The side event allows Heads of Government and State, Government Ministers and political leaders the opportunity to discuss effective approaches to addressing AMR at a local, national and global level with regards to funding, policy development and international and multi-sectorial collaboration.

The GLG is comprised of world leaders and experts from across sectors working together to accelerate political action on AMR based on the One Health approach.

AMR poses serious threats to human, animal, plant and environmental health, food safety, food security, and pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response. AMR disproportionately affects low- and middle-income countries and contributes to almost 5 million deaths per year. The World Bank estimates that an additional 24 million people would be forced into extreme poverty by 2030 if no action is taken on AMR today.
